Snow
I yawned lightly and smiled at the image that was playing out in front of me, Robin carefully lifted the squirming, wet baby from between Regina's legs. Her eyes were wet with grateful tears and sweat, and her hand still clutching mine as the couple first laid eyes on their newborn.
"She's perfect, oh my god." Robin wept, still keeping the crying baby close to his chest as he tried to balance her in one arm, while reaching for the scissors that sat beside Regina's leg.
"You did it! Good job mama." I smiled, gently brushing her stray hairs back that became disheveled from her hard work. The house was extremely quiet and only the sound of the infant's tiny cries filled the silence.
"See, I knew you could do it." I smiled, recalling Regina's panic as her labor accelerated, forcing her to deliver her baby upstairs in her bedroom, as opposed to the hospital. "Let me see." She cried tiredly, reaching out to her husband as he gently set her in her trembling, tired arms.
"She's perfect, oh my god." Regina wept, rubbing a finger over her baby's cheek. "Oh." She moaned momentarily, her grip tightening on the squirming baby. "It's probably the placenta." I rationalized to Robin who nodded and looked at his instructions that he had googled when he had come to terms that he'd be delivering the baby.
"Deep breath, the placenta is coming." Robin instructed, rubbing her knee as she began to take shallow breaths, but her face just contorted as another influx of pain washed over her. "Can you take the baby and bundle her. I'm gonna need your help with Regina." Robin requested, his voice faltering momentarily as he looked at his instructions, looking back up at his wife.
I nodded and carefully scooped the baby from Regina's arms, resulting in a painful groan. My heart began to hammer faster as I quickly swaddled the baby with a towel, setting her down in the bassinet that the couple had prepared.
"This doesn't feel right! Ah!" Regina cried, struggling to catch her breath as Robin nervously rubbed her knees, desperately trying to encourage and comfort her.
"Okay, sweetheart, let's try and calm down so we can figure out what's bothering you." I comforted, scooting next to her on the bed, carefully rubbing her head while looking over at Robin. "Now, why don't you take a look and see if you can see what's happening." I suggested, gently adjusting her onto my chest, allowing me to bear some of her weight. Robin nodded at me and grabbed another pair of gloves, gingerly spreading Regina's legs once more, inserting two fingers, causing his wife to wince painfully.
"It's okay, just squeeze my hand." I whispered, allowing her to reach over and grip my wrist painfully. I watched Robin's face twist with confusion and glance over at me, removing his hand before sitting back to gather his bearings.
"I...I think another baby is in there, and I think it's coming." He muttered, looking up at me for help and answers. I adjusted my grip on Regina who was clearly zoned out while trying to focus on an apparent contraction, reaching my hand over towards the bottom of her stomach, pressing near her pelvis. My blood went cold as I felt an engaged head, ready to come out.
"Regina, baby, we have another baby, it's coming out right now." Robin explained, making her eyes open with fear, shaking her head back and forth as she cried.
"No...I don't want to do it." She cried, looking at Robin who carefully rubbed her leg, his blue eyes twinkling with excitement. "I know, but we have to meet our extra little surprise baby." He encouraged, his wife sighing in exhaustion.
"Fine, but you both need to help move me." She groaned, a new confidence in her voice as she struggled forward, a hand reaching out towards me to pull her forward, the other shooting to her tender stomach which was now still noticeably swollen from the second baby.
