The ratio to women to men over 65 years old is 100 to 69. The ratio of women to men over 85 years old is 100 to 39.

So here I am! Sitting on Bea's sofa crying into my school jumper whilst Bea wipes my bloody wounds.

Bea moved house 6 months ago. She moved because it was nearer to her daughter and her grand children. Even though she does not live down the stairs from us I still visit her! Whether I'm coming home from school or a fly in visit.

"Did you have breakfast sweetheart? I could make you some jam on toast?!" she asks. You can't say no to a poor, lonely, old women like Bea. She moved here to SEE her daughter and her grandchildren but she barely ever sees them.

"Of course! Thank you!" So that's what she does, spreading the jam thickly. After five slices of toast I say;

"I need to be on my wayyyy...."

"Would you like to borrow a book dear?" I jump at the chance!

"Oh yes please!"

Bea's book room is like a massive library! It's the size of our whole flat! So my next half an hour, which I don't really have time to spend, is spent choosing books! After studying the back and the first few pages, I choose a book of fairy tales, a book on space and a book called Little Woman! When Bea saw what I had chosen she told me I had good taste in reading. Apparently she read "Little Women" when she was young!

I looked at my watch...
8:45......that's when school started! I was late! For the for the first time ever! From Bea's house it was a 15 minute walk! I am going to be super late!
"Sorry to disappoint you Bea but I have to head off to school. I don't want to be late!" I lied, standing up.
"Oh I haven't made you late have I?! Silly old me keeping a young girl like you back when you need to be getting an education!" She sighed, now looking miserable.
"No you haven't made me late at all Bea!" I lied again. Bea peered at me. Her eyes slanting behind her glasses.
"Your lying to me!" She looked disappointed, "I know when you lying!"
"I'm not!" I protested even though I was. How did she know?!
"Oh, you are. Every time you lie you rub your ear! Your ear says it all."
"Wow Bea!"
"So you are lying!" She gave me a smug look but then she laughed.
"Oh dear Bea, I would truly love to stay, but I must get to school. Goodbye." I said walking out the door waving.
The trek to school felt longer than usual! That was probably because I knew I was in serious trouble.
When the bell has gone for school to start, if you are not in form you have to go through the office, not straight through the school grounds. If you are even 1 minute late you get a detention, so I knew for a fact that I was getting one as 25 minutes late is not exceptable.
Unless I could make up a lie, say that I had a doctors or dentist appointment! But what if a teacher found out I was lying, I could lose my position as school council, or even head of middle school! But what if I could wing it! Or I could bunk off school and pretend I was ill. Mum never called in when either Sunny or Star were sick. I couldn't decide!
As I pondered this vital decision into school, I found myself at the school gates. This was it........
