I woke up in an unfamiliar place that stunk of wolves. I scrambled to a sitting position, and realized I was in some kind of bedroom.
"Warren, calm down. It's okay, you're safe. You fell asleep after we shifted back, and I couldn't get you to wake up. I was scared so I brought you to the pack doctor, but he said you were just sleep deprived, so I let you rest." I glance at Asher. How could he bring me to the pack knowing wolves made me uncomfortable?
"What time is it?" I ask, worried as I see it's dark out.
"About eight pm." Asher tells me.
"I'm going-" I stop mid-sentence. I smelled him, again. How could he be here, oh god, there's Brin's scent as well. I bolted out of the room, running through halls before finally making my way outside. That's when I see them. I shrink back into myself, not even bothering trying to control Cole. He was out for blood. I could see Brin, Trent, Em, and Diana. I could hear Asher behind me, calling out to me, unaware that Cole was in control. It all made sense, why Em's scent put me on edge; she was their daughter. One I never knew they had.
Cole jumped, shifting mid-air, and jumps onto Trent. He digs his claws into his chest, while grasping Trent's throat between his teeth. Em shrieks, and I feel Brin try to pivot us off of her mate. However, Cole doesn't budge, but instead claws her front, making her fall to the ground, clutching her arms around her.
"Cole!" Asher yells. "Don't do this."
Cole briefly glances backwards, but hisses at our mate before returning his attention to Trent.
Do you want me to kill him, Cole resounds throughout my head.
No, I can't do that to Em, I explain.
Cole shifts back, and grabs Trent by the throat, and kicks Brin away, as she had started to come closer.
"Do you remember the promise you made Warren last time he saw you? I wish to fulfil it, as I would love nothing more than to taste your blood, but he won't allow me. Because of your daughter." Cole growls at him, hissing in his face when he's done, making sure to show off the sharp canines in our mouth.
"Get him some clothes." Asher growls to someone.
"You know how badly he wanted everything to end because of you? You both deserve death." Cole roars at the two. He was a ball of fury.
Cole you need to give me control again, I tell him.
No. You can't face them, he tells me.
No, I can't, but it'll be okay, I reassure him, even though neither of us believe the words.
Cole relents, making me scramble away from the two bleeding wolves. Asher hands me home sweat pants that I quickly put on, avoiding eye contact with everyone as I pick up my belongings.
"Warren, I'm sorry." Brin sobs.
I look at her, I could tell they were both sober, but it didn't mean much at the moment. Cole's anger made my fear dissipate, but I still wanted nothing to do with either. "No. You don't get to talk to me." I tell her.
"Warren, please, listen to us. We just want to talk." Trent begs, while standing up. I was now taller than him, and it was odd. He used to be inches taller than me.
"Is that what you wanted when you were spying on me?" I sneer, my anger flaring, making Asher regard him coldly. No one moved, it seemed as if no one was even breathing. I couldn't tell if my anger was truly mine or Cole's, but I didn't care at this point. "Or is that what you wanted when you kicked me out after almost killing me?" I ask coldly. Trent freezes, as does everybody else.
I start walking away, and I can hear the commotion behind me, but Asher detaches himself from it and jogs after me.
"Let me drive you." he says, and I stiffly nod.
We walk in silence, and I get into the passenger seat.
"Will you tell me what that all was about?" Asher asks softly. "Those were Em's parents. They left her when she was young, but they came back to find her not too long ago. They recently joined the pack."
I bristle at that news. I was expected to join the same pack as them? "They were my old foster parents." I say quietly. I might as well tell him, or at least some of it. I knew they'd probably tell the pack wolves, but I'd rather Asher hear it from me. "Let's just say they were really abusive. I knew they were wolves, because of their eyes and claws, I had even seen them shift once or twice. Then I shifted myself. Obviously, they hated I was a feline and almost killed me. Trent kicked me out, and told me if he ever saw me again he'd kill me. That's why I don't trust wolves, that's why they make me so anxious." I explain briefly, and the more I talked the more anger I could feel radiating off of him.
"That's why you have so many scars?" he asks.
"Yup." I confirm. Before you shift, you don't have accerlated healing, or at least I didn't. So I had every scar from before I shifted. They marred my skin, from small skinny ones, to fatter and deeper ones on my back, shoulders, and torso.
Asher clenches his hands on the steering wheel, tight enough to turn his knuckles white. "Warren I promise," Asher turns in his seat, regarding me with those bright green eyes, "I will never let anyone hurt you again, and if they do, I'm going to kill them." He turns to face the road again, making me more as ease.
"You can't make promises like that." I tell him. "Ones you won't be able to keep. You can't protect me forever." I mutter the last part, but he could obviously still hear it.
"I'll never leave your side again if that's what it takes."
