In a classroom occupied by students, each sitting on their locker made of wood. It was arranged in a parallel line spaced in to four rows. Kamsi was quietly sitting at the front leaning forward with her head placed on top of the top wooden frame supported by her right arm. The room was a bit noisy as everyone was talking and discussing with their friends. It's already afternoon and she could feel the heat from the corrugated aluminium roof as the sun beams. She closed her eyes wishing she could sleep off before the break is over as her eyes was heavy and couldn't stay open for long. She hopes for sleep and consciously listens to the conversation of her neighbour with her friends as they discussed.
"Did you remember that very tall one?", asked one of them
"Yes!", they chorused
"He bought me some shoes and handbags yesterday", she said excitedly.
She knows that voice and could put a name to it, it's Cynthia! The one with a round buttock that bounces whenever she walks. She heard that she doesn't wear undies at all to school and has a lot of toasters from all classes ranging from secondary school level up to working class men who buys her many gifts and she doesn't say no to the advances of any of them whom she feels reached up to her taste. She felt a gentle touch on her arm as she heard a low voice call her name.
"Kamsi!", it calls.
She raised her head and it was Harry, she suspected that it was him when she heard it.
"Are you okay?", he asked looking deep in to her eyes, he always does that whenever he talks to her, her alone! At least among her female classmates, she has seen the difference whenever he talks to them.
He has really helped her out many times, he does most of her school assessment any day she fell sick and couldn't make it to school. There was a day he nearly got in to trouble for writing English classwork for her. She believed that he likes her but haven't said it yet since she could see it in his eyes.
"yes", she answered, still feeling the soreness in her back as she stretches herself
"Are you sure?", he asked and she nodded.
"Then why are you looking this way...or you just don't want to tell me?", he demanded.
"How am I looking?", she questioned
"You are looking dull but still beautiful", he answered
"Thanks but I'm okay", she giggled
"Alright", he shrugged and walked away.
This is not the first or the last time someone is showing concern for her that day. Almost all her classmates did except few. She bends back to her locker and that was when the bell rang signifying that the break was over. She got up, opens her locker to check for the subject they have at that time, she brought out a notebook and a pen and dropped it on top after shutting it in preparation for the lesson. Everyone is now going back to their seat.
A woman in her early forties walks in, holding some books in her arms, the students stood up to greet her and sat back after she responded waving at them to sit, she waited as one of them dust the black board. She took a piece of white chalk from a small carton placed on kamsi's desk and wrote on the board, she introduces the topic and then starts writing and everyone joined her.
A dark looking girl with a braided hair, styled all back in a neatly white pressed long sleeve shirt tucked in to a black plain skirt stood at the entrance."Excuse me ma may I come in?", she asked lifting one of her fingers and waiting for permission.
The teacher nodded in agreement and she walks in heading straight for Kamsi.
"Do you have a spare pen?", she asked in a quiet manner so as not to disturb the peaceful atmosphere as everyone was busy writing.
Kamsi nodded and opens the locker with her right hand, holding her book and pen with the other to prevent them from falling. She searched inside looking for the second pen to give her friend Nonso, they have not been seeing each other as often as when their class have not been divided and were staying beside each other and virtually does everything together, irrespective of that, they still go home together after school. She saw the pen and gave it to her.
