Friday is always the perfect day, Roxy Villanovos thought as her and her friends trudged along the narrow sidewalks, their converse sneakers smacking the pavement in perfect rhythm. She looked toward the sky and breathed in deep, relishing the warmth of the sun on her face. It was late May in St. Louis, Missouri and the weather had warmed up enough to be able to wear shorts and her school was taking advantage of the warmth to hold an end of the year assembly outside. This Friday was particularly perfect because Roxy was ending her American high school career and beginning her Australian one in less than two weeks. Apparently, in Australia it was winter and kids instead got their summer break around December or something like that. Roxy sighed, realizing that this change was totally going to mess with her system and she cringed at the fact that she might be disoriented at the beginning of her new start.
She smirked at the thought of a "new start". It seemed people only wanted a new start when they had totally screwed something up at the place they were currently at, but Roxy saw this opportunity to move to Australia more as an exploratory one, especially since she was moving their with her three best friends.
She snuck a glance at the three diverse girls chattering away excitedly about the assembly and smiled inwardly. Amanda Hubbard, Kylie Burbery, and Francesca Castellanos had been her best friends since first grade. All of their parents had become friends around that time, due to a business deal that they were concocting and Roxy could remember her, Amanda and Kylie clicking immediately. They were all interested in the same music and fashion stores and would email and Facebook each other constantly. It had taken them awhile to like Francesca, who was basically the female version of Carlton from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But after several forced interactions, they discovered that Francesca was an incredibly cool version of a genius and could cite almost the entire encyclopedia at age 7! They found her particularly useful for homework and she could literally learn any subject in a day. She was basically the first of them to learn to sew and Roxy remembered how they would create and coordinate outfits that no one else had at school.
Roxy chuckled to herself, remembering how invincible it felt to be original and caught the attention of Amanda, who cocked her blonde eyebrow at her. Amanda was the typical surfer white girl that everyone has a love hate relationship with in most of those teeny bopper 80's movies. Its not enough for her to have electric blue eyes and baby blonde hair, but she also had long spidery legs that seemed to have obtained quite amount of lean muscle in them over the past few months. Roxy made a mental note to get Amanda to teach her some of those yoga poses that she has been doing.
"Oh no guys, Roxy is thinking out loud again", Amanda said rolling her blue eyes.
Kylie giggled and peered around Amanda to look at Roxy, her long jet black hair falling softly over her shoulder. Kylie was Korean and Scottish and literally a raven-haired beauty. She had crisp, vibrant green eyes and a beaming white smile that no guy at Washington did not notice. Kylie had an unconventional beauty, and was quite frankly "the shit" at Washington High. She had had the most boyfriends out of all of them and currently on number 26 at the moment.
She's regretting her short haircut", Francesca joked causing Kylie and Amanda to double over in laughter.
Roxy groaned and rubbed her short black mane. Since she was moving to Australia, she thought it would be fun to start a new look and cut her hair into a bob like Rihanna's in her "Good Girl Gone Bad" days, but she mildly regretted it, because she lacked the RiRi attitude to pull it.
" It was a good idea when I was getting it done", Roxy said matter of factly to Francesca. "We can't all have thick curly hair like yours".
Francesca beamed with pride and flipped her long, wavy black hair dramatically causing Amanda and Kylie to giggle again.
Francesca was beautiful in the nerdy sort of way. She hid her large round hazel eyes behind hipster rimmed glasses, sweaters and long pencil skirts. But Roxy had to give it to the girl, that she did bring pizazz to her nerd style. Today she was wearing a sweater vests that had a galaxy pattern to match her galaxy converse. She had layered the sweater with a black t-shirt underneath that blended in with her black, skintight pencil skirt that had a zipper coming from the hem at the bottom. The galaxy pattern played off her caramel brown skin so subtly and perfectly. Roxy admired how Francesca was not afraid to be herself, most of the black girls she had known would not even dare to sway from the ghetto or church girl stereotypes. Francesca was interesting because she also had a Spanish background like Roxy, although Francesca's grandfather was Cuban compared to Roxy's actual father being from Spain.
"You see, if wasn't for you we could be called the long hair, don't care squad, but nooo...", Francesca cooed.
She flipped her long thick waves again with sass, and Amanda laughed extra hard with Kylie not too far behind. They clamored their way to the top of the bleachers and settled next to Royce Carrington and Brice Bailey, two of their favorite high school idiots. Royce grinned uncontrollably at Francesca who was snuggly nestled between him and Kylie.
Francesca uncomfortably straightened her back and crossed her legs. Roxy chuckled at how conservative she got around boys. She was anal about keeping her squeaky clean rep and she wanted boys to know she was a nonsense type broad. "If you want a cheap chick, go down to Freaknik...", Francesca would always quote Lil Kim when it came to situations with meddlesome guys. Roxy had to give her props, because someone of the boys she attracted were fine.
"You tell a girl she looks like Rihanna one time...", Amanda said nudging Roxy.
Okay okay lets give her a break guys, Kylie said.
"You guys suck", Roxy said over exaggeratingly. So unsupportive...
Amanda harrumphed and looked Roxy up and down. "You do realize we are uprooting ourselves from our comfortable American homes to go with you to Australia and give up a summer break. I would call that pretty damn supportive!" Kylie and Francesca hummed in support.
Roxy giggled at how right Amanda was. Not wanting to part ways so soon in their lives, Francesca, Amanda and Kylie signed up for a study abroad program in Australia at the same school that Roxy was attending.
Roxy smiled. It felt good to have people who love you and would do anything for you. These girls were such a blessing in her life. She felt she could do anything because she had such a strong supportive network. She smiled to herself and rubbed her hair again, making a mental note to stop by the mall later on to get some make-up and black pumps. She chuckled at her apparent boldness.
"She's doing it again", Amanda said annoyed and Kylie and Francesca shook their heads at Roxy as the band began playing their drums and the end of the year assembly starts.
