“OMG!” Roxy paced back and forth in front of her mirror. It was worse than what she had expected.

The uniforms were a literal mess and she looked like someone’s grandmother. Not to mention, her short bob wasn’t going well with the conservative look of the uniform. Why would they think that a plaid skirt, socks up to your ankles, clunky black shoes, and a blazer looked good together? What was wrong with the uniform designers at Norwest?

Roxy put her forehead against her mirror and started banging it. She was going to look so stupid on her first day.

“What are you doing?”

She swiveled around to see Amanda, Kylie, and Francesca looking generally concerned for her well-being.

“I look ridiculous”, Roxy whined grabbing her skirt and flaring it out curtsey style.

“Um…Hello”, Francesca said, motioning down at all of their clothes. They too had the same conservative, tacky get-up as her. “We and every girl that attends Norwest is going to be wearing this outfit.”

“Yeah but none of them tried to look like Rihanna with a stupid haircut”, Roxy said turning back to the mirror and making a face.

“Come on Roxy you are being dramatic”, Kylie said agitated. “Let’s go! I wanna see if that cute guy dyed his hair a normal color.”

“As if”, Amanda chimed up.” We might not have any classes with him, or see him ever again. Plus you have a boyfriend.”

Roxy cocked her head at Amanda’s defensive tone. She certainly had to notice him eying her up at the tour Saturday and maybe she was interested too. She smiled at her through the mirror, and Amanda rolled her eyes.

“You’re being weird again Villanovos. Get your shit and let’s go!” Amanda turned on her heel and stomped down the stairs.

“What crawled up her butt”, Kylie commented to Francesca.

Francesca shrugged uninterestedly and followed Amanda.

Roxy was a nervous wreck as they made their way to Norwest. Good thing it was a full half an hour from their neighborhood. That gave her some time to strategically cover up her nervousness. Her friends seemed to be completely unaffected by the fact that were starting at a new school, with new people, and most importantly, a new start! She wished she had their nerves of steel.

Her mom dropped them off in the front of the school and sped away faster than normal since she was late for a meeting. Roxy looked disappointedly after the car and wished she would have at least given her a chance to decide to jump back in the car.

Her friends were already making their way to the entrance without her and Roxy ran to catch up with them. There were so many students at Norwest. Did everyone in Australia go to a private school? Not everyone had on the same uniform either. What?

The girls headed to the office to pick up their schedules.

Roxy had geometry, science, literature and lunch with all her friends. However, that is where the schedule comparison ended. Francesca was taking a big load of science and math courses for electives and Amanda and Kylie were invested in computer and tech courses. Roxy seemed to have been the only one signed up for Beginning music, P.E., and Guitar. They should have coordinated better.

“We seem to be in some house called Chisholm”, Francesca said. “What the heck does that mean?”

“Girls if you turn around, the board behind you explains all the houses”, the receptionist politely informed.

Apparently, the Chisholm house is for those who demonstrate community service and spirit and their mascot was a hawk. Roxy sighed inwardly. I guess her father’s speech about developing and building homes really did have something to do with making your community better. Apparently, they thought because she was his daughter, that made her a community advocate too?
