LUKE’S POV
“We should really start filming”, Luke said.
He was lying on the bed with his eyes closed and his guitar laying across his chest.
Calum grunted and continued texting one of the new American girls that they had met at school today. He seemed to be infatuated with her, and Luke did have to admit when he first saw her getting out of the black SUV, he had inkling to bury his face in her long, strawberry-scented dark waves. If she took off those big hipster glasses she would be drop dead gorgeous, but those coke bottles hid all her beauty.
Luke smiled at how all the guys in school were reacting to those girls. It was like they had never seen pretty girls before. Norwest had loads of them, starting with his girl Anisha and her friends Chloe and Maxine. He chuckled softly at their jealously of the Americans.
“She should not have cut her hair like that”, Maxine had said at lunch, casting an evil eye towards the table they were at. She had been talking about the one named Roxy. Roxy was absolutely gorgeous and was probably going to be really popular with guys at Norwest. She had this golden olive skin tone and the softest green eyes anyone could ever wish to behold. She was also really shy and timid in the sexiest way, and Luke couldn’t stop thinking about her when he saw her hop out of the car with all the rest of her friends. He had encouraged his friends to follow them to see what class they had, and it was just his luck that they were in the same first period as him. He could remember how nervous Roxy looked with her golden legs propped up on her friend Amanda’s seat staring down at her phone. She didn’t even look towards them when Calum started talking. Luke thought he had seen Roxy peek at him a little later after stupid Alex had interrupted the conversation, but he wasn’t sure. He didn’t want to look at her too much or Anisha would get crazy jealous.
Luke sighed. Anisha. He had been regretting the day that he had gotten back with her. Last year, Anisha had broken up with him over a misunderstanding with his friend, Jacqueline. Jacqueline had just joined Norwest and had kissed him before she knew he was going out with Anisha, and Anisha flipped out. Her friends Maxine and Chloe had made it worse, they spread all kinds of rumors about Jacqueline and Jacqueline started cutting and drinking a lot. She eventually had to go to rehab and leave Norwest for good. She hadn’t contacted Luke ever again, and he was sad to have lost his friend. Anisha, under pressure from Maxine, Chloe and everyone else in the school had broken up with him before he could even explain. The rest of the year he had been known as a “cheater”, which got him good and bad points depending on the type of people you talked to.
He had been upset that Anisha would just dump him without even hearing his side of the story or trusting him enough to think some misunderstanding was happening, but she had begged him to go back with her, just before term started. “Just give us one more chance”, she said. “We can go slowly, it doesn’t have to be official yet. We are meant to be together.”
Luke cringed at her words. What does that mean, “We are meant to be together”. Luke did not believe in fate, destiny, or luck. Things like love at first sight, was merely fascination at first site. But the thing that bothered him most was that for her, “We are meant to be together”, merely meant that their relationship was what everyone around them was expecting. He hated when people, said they were the “perfect couple” like it was set in stone that they had to be together. Maybe if he dated someone who no one thought would be “right” for him, he could truly judge whether he was in love and happy. Maybe he could ride this thing out until he graduated. Then he would go to uni, far away from Riverstone and Rouse Hill and Anisha and none of this “perfect couple” stuff would matter to anyone.
He sighed and set his guitar aside, getting up and going to his computer.
“What’s wrong with you”, Michael asked. He was slumped down in Luke’s planet chair with his phone in his lap. His Taylor was positioned next to him and he had his feet up on Luke’s desk. He was eyeing Luke suspiciously.
