Hans was sitting in the inn with his daughter, Helena and Captain Nicolas. The other guard had gone back home while Captain Nicolas stayed. Hans didn't mind, after all Captain Nicolas was a friend of his. It was around five in the afternoon already. They had spent the whole day, playing, laughing, and even Helena convinced Captain Nicolas to let her draw on his arm.
"Your daughter is something else huh?", Captain Nicolas says smiling at the little red-haired girl who was happily eating a pastry.
"She is...", Hans laughs. "She's a lot different than either Annette or me which I'm super grateful for."
"Shocking to think that you and Queen Annette had a child together", Captain Nicolas says to Hans and Hans agreed with him.
"I think that too", he agrees with a sigh. "But we were both such in dark places and I tried fill that void in me using Annette...we were both using each other and when she got pregnant, it wasn't very pretty. We had arguments and eventually, we separated right when Helena was born...after about a year, Annette left without word. I was left with Helena and later told she married a king. She didn't Helena after that."
"And to think she wanted Helena back still boggles me", Captain Nicolas says and Hans nods with a sigh.
"I won't allow it of course", Hans says.
"Allow what?", Helena suddenly asks when she tuned in to the conversation. Hans glances nervously at her. He has never once told Helena about her mother.
"U-uh...", Hans trails off, unsure of what to tell his daughter.
"Papa?", Helena asks, blinking a few times. She was around three, almost four. Hans didn't know if there will ever the right time to tell her about her mother.
"Helena...", Hans sighs glancing up at Captain Nicolas who gave him an assuring tap on the shoulder and a nod, meaning it's time to tell her. "Your mama has come to fetch you...but she isn't a very good person."
"Mama?", Helena asks, her eyes curious about that. She has never grown up with a mother and Hans never discussed what exactly a mother does.
"Your mommy, the one who brought you into this world", Hans tried to explain. "I know it would be selfish of me not to tell you about her..."
He knew Helena couldn't quite understand the concept of a mother or understand a word that Hans is saying. But he wanted to get it off his chest for once. "Like Mama Elsa?", Helena suddenly asks and Hans froze.
He didn't realize that Helena and Elsa had already created such a bond that she's now seen Elsa as a mother. That made him panic for a moment. It would break Helena's heart when they were to leave and Helena would never be able to see Elsa ever again.
"Y-yes...like Mama Elsa", Hans confirms and Helena tilted her head innocently and smiled
"Can I meet my mama?", she asks and Hans sighs shaking his head.
"No, my dear...she's not a very good person", Hans tries to explain to her and Helena leans forward.
"Is she bad?", she asks innocently and Hans nodded.
"She is", Hans confirms for her. "It's hard for me to say such a thing but it's the sad truth..."
"It's okay papa", Helena smiles before giving her father a small smile. Hans smiled back at his daughter before placing a hand on her cheek.
Hans wondered to himself, if it wasn't for Helena, would he have ever changed as a person? Would he still be the same monster he was five years ago? Before Helena was born? Helena has brought so much light into his life. He told himself the moment she was born, he would never let anyone hurt her. If she were to be taken away, Hans just knew he would spiral into a dark path. He would not give up until his daughter was back with him.
"You're a good father, Hans", Captain Nicolas suddenly tells Hans.
Hans looked up, was shocked by the Captain's words. "R-really?", Hans asked him, unsure about his statement.
"You are", Captain Nicolas says with a smile. "I personally have two sons and I could not imagine raising them all by myself. You truly are a hero to your daughter...I applaud you for raising your daughter so well and all by yourself."
Hans felt a smile make its way to his face. Captain Nicolas's words made him feel like he was doing something at least right in his life, raising Helena to be different from him, to be a good person, and make her feel loved...something he lacked in his life.
Just as Hans and Captain Nicolas were about to leave the inn to bring Helena back, the door swung open revealing Frederic. Hans froze as he stormed towards them. Hans grabbed Helena's hand and pulled her behind him.
"Hans", Frederic addresses him once he stood in front of him. "I need to speak with you...in private please."
All eyes were on them. Hans pursed his lips before reluctantly nodding his head. "Without your daughter if I may...request...", Frederic then adds and Hans sighs frustratedly before looking down at his daughter.
"Fine...", Hans agrees. "Helena, stay with Captain Nicolas for a moment. I just need to speak with Prince Frederic."
"Okay...", Helena nods before walking to Captain Nicolas and standing beside him.
Hans glances briefly at her, giving her a reassuring smile before following Frederic outside of the inn. They headed to a more secluded place before stopping and Prince Frederic turned to Hans.
"Hans...", he began with a sigh, unsure of what to say.
"Prince Frederic", he addresses him with respect. He still does hate him and his blood boils when he thinks about what Frederic has done to his niece.
"I'm not here to bash you, disrespect you, or call you names. Sure, I still hate you and that will probably never change but I needed to talk to you in the most civil way I can", Frederic begins with and Hans nodded, feeling his fists clench still by the mere sound of his voice.
"Fair enough. The feeling is mutual but I can put it aside for now...", Hans says. "What do you want?"
"I need you to leave Arendelle", Frederic tells him. "By this week....if you want to keep your daughter."
"What?", Hans says, confused by Frederic's sudden statement. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"I made a deal with Annette. Leave now or Annette will take Helena with her", Frederic tells him sternly and Hans gritted his teeth, his fists clenched, as he struggled to refrain himself from punching Frederic.
Hans hated the look on Frederic's face. He hated him and he doesn't think he ever will get along with him ever again. He scoffed at him before nodding his head. Fine, he'll leave even in his state, as long as Helena stays with him and is far far away from Annette.
"Fine", Hans says. "I wish to never see you or Annette ever again..."
"Stay the hell away from me, Arendelle, and especially my wife", Frederic hisses at Hans.
Hans shook his head in disbelief. Frederic still has not changed at all. "Do me one favor...", Hans suddenly blurts out. "Take care of Queen Elsa...you don't know how damn lucky you are."
