The majority of the day passed in a daze. Classes that should've had more of my attention were slipping in and out of focus constantly. I luckily didn't have Jack for any of my classes that day after 1st period. I had found staying focused extra hard with him there.
It wasn't until lunch that something drew away my thoughts from that morning, the student elections. They were going to be announced up on the stage. What a terrifying way to find out if you were elected or not. A small jitter began to buzz through my body. I knew this was only high school, it wasn't going to be such a big deal if I didn't get it, but it would still be nice.
I headed to our table and found only Rap and Merida sitting there. Rap saw me and eagerly ushered me forward, while Merida put her hand to her head as if she had a headache.
"Hey guys, what's going on?"
"Elsa! How could you not come this morning! I said it was going to be big news! Right Merida! Wasn't it!"
Merida smiled weakly, "I could tell her some other time, it didn't have to be this morning." I gave Merida an apologetic smile, "I'm still sorry I wasn't able to meet up. Could you tell me now?"
Rap clapped happily, "Yes! We have time! Flynn told me he and the guys had to talk to some teacher real quick before coming. Merida please!" Merida tried to look annoyed but couldn't suppress a small smile. She then turned to me and her whole face changed from one of exasperation to something full of happiness.
"Okay, so last night when Hiccup asked me to walk him out he seemed very nervous. He was jittery and babbling the whole time and I was just curious as to what was making him act that way. Once we got to his car he turned to me and looked at me, like, straight in the eyes. You know he usually has trouble doing that," she said with a trace of fondness. "And he just blurted it out," she said laughing.
Excitement spread through me, "Blurted what out?!"
Merida looked at me, eyes shining, "He asked me out!" Even though I was told what Hiccup was going to do, I still wasn't sure if he'd actually do it. I was thrilled with the outcome.
I wanted to yell and clap but I was sure that would be too much, so I just settled for slapping Merida's arm in excitement. Merida pulled away and mumbled at me but her smile was still present. Just when we began to settle down from all the fist bumps, 'Yes!'s, and goofy giggles, the guys came in and sat down.
"Man! Ms. Phipps can be such a pain!" Flynn sat next to Rap and put his head on her shoulder. Rap smiled widely. Hiccup sat on Merida's other side and Jack sat next to Flynn. I began to feel a little nervous since I hadn't talked to Jack since that conversation we had in the morning and I wanted to do my best at acting normal.
It seemed that Mother Earth took pity on me and decided to send someone on stage to begin senior class elections. I quickly made it a point to the rest of the group.
"Guys! Look they're going to announce the results!" Everyone turned expectantly towards the stage, Hiccup noticeably began to rub his hands like he did yesterday before the performance. I noticed Merida look at Hiccup too and she put her hand on his arm. I quickly looked away, this was obviously between them two only.
"Hey everyone! I am Nick Guajardo, and I will be announcing your senior class officers. Without further ado, let's begin! First, Historian! Your new Historian is Julius Lopez!" Everyone clapped politely and Julius rose up and waved.
Rap turned to Flynn, "I'm sorry." Flynn shrugged and said, "It's fine. There were a lot of people going for it anyway."
Nick began to announce treasurer, "And you're new treasurer is, Krystal Davis!"
I had a mix of feelings, one being disappointment, another understanding, and last, surprisingly, a little relief. It would be nice to be a part of something big, but I was never that talkative and nobody really knew me, and who would vote for someone they didn't know? Also, after never being someone who would hold a position like that and then suddenly jumping into uncharted territory, it didn't seem right. Perhaps I wasn't ready, and that wasn't a bad thing.
