"Athena!" Jay yells and starts to walk towards me.
"You didn't answer any of my calls or texts!" He shouts in my face.
"Wow calm down I was busy." I told him and he shakes his head with a devious look on his face.
"Busy with Lucian?" He asks.
"Busy with his little sister." I grit.
"Well whatever you know it's fine, you're into that kind of stuff aren't you." He says and my whole body goes numb.
"What are you talking about." I language to get out.
"You like the bad boys, the gang members huh?" He asks me.
"I-I don" I begin but Jay interrupts me.
"I know about your dad and I know about Tate." He says with a stupid smirk on his face.
"You don't know what you're talking about." I tell him and begin to walk towards the apartment.
"I think I do." He says and grabs my shoulder, pulling me back.
"Let me tell you, Lucian is just as bad as Tate if not worse." He tells me. He really couldn't be any more of an ass could he?"
"You don't know anything!" I yell.
"And leave Lucian out of this!" I tell him and climb the stairs to the front door.
"Watch out, history seems to repeat itself." He shouts and I slam the door.
Jay didn't know what he was talking about, I get that word spreads quickly but seriously? When I walked into the small living room I see my mom sprawled across the couch, still in her work clothes. It's hard to think about how my life used to be so different. Things shouldn't have turned out the way they did and it was all my fault. My stupid decisions led to the people I cared about most getting hurt. Now my father is god knows where, my siblings are dead, my ex boyfriend is in jail and my mom cries every night and me? I just want to make enough money for me to apply to Columbia, get a good job and get my mom out of this situation.
"Honey?" My mom yawned out.
"It's me don't worry" I say and sit on the edge of the counter.
"You look like a mess." She said laughing lightly.
"Yeah babysitting was rough." I say trying not to cry.
"But I thought you said you had the night of-" She began but I interjected.
"Long story." I say and let out a long breathe.
"How was your date?" She asks excitedly. I had almost forgotten all about the whole reason I was all worked up, Jay.
"If Jay knocks on the door I want you to slam it in his face and lock the door, okay?" I plead with her.
"I'm assuming something happened?" She says and looks at me with her eyebrows scrunched up.
"He knows things he shouldn't that's all." I reassure her.
"Athena." She warns.
"Mom it's fine I'll take care of it." I tell her.
"You aren't untouchable anymore Athena! We don't have any protection." She begins to panic. When our family was one I was untouchable. Nobody would dare mess with my father or his family.
"We said that we would lay low, this is not laying low!" She shouts at me and rightfully so.
"You know what? No more babysitting you'll have to waitress again." She tells me.
"And work at the movie theater, the car wash and tutor." I spat and she squint her eyes.
"Excuse me?" She says and walks closer to me.
"You really think that we can stay here if I waitress? I'm 17 mom, I have school and if you are going to be selfish and punish me for what happened even more than fine I'll have to drop out!" I shout at her. She doesn't say anything but nods. She thinks I should drop out, that's the final straw.
"The only reason I got into this mess is because of you!" I yelled back at her. I couldn't hide my anger anymore, everything began to pour out of me.
"I finally found a good paying job and it happens to get me into a bit of trouble but this job is going to keep this roof over both our heads, you think I should drop out and throw away my dreams because you made a mistake and it's my debt to pay?" I roar, all I see is red.
"I wasn't the one who threw that party." She says and crosses her arms over her body.
"I was a kid and you left me alone." I told her.
"You pushed your father over the edge." She yells back at me.
"He's not even my real dad!" I screamed at her.
"He didn't love me the way he loved them!" I yelled and she stayed quiet but was shaking with rage.
"We were kids and you left us alone." I say as the tears begin to well up.
"Do you know what will happen if he finds us?" She yells.
"He's already found me once, or do you not remember?" I ask her and she shakes her head disbelieving.
"Exactly!" She yells at me.
"I'm serious you don't get to ruin my life any longer." She breathes out and walks out of the apartment. The words rang in my head. "You don't get to ruin my life any longer."
I wasn't the one who threw the party, it was Tate. Mom and Dad had threatened to send me away to a boarding school if I acted up again, we had the money for boarding school back then. Tate thought it would be fine to smoke inside and I didn't protest, I should have. My siblings were all sleeping upstairs. The house lit on fire, I tried to go upstairs to get my siblings, I really did try. I still have to scars from being burnt on my back. The fireman pulled me back and took me out of the house.
I am not my father's daughter, my mom had me when she was 16 with some boy from her high school. When my mom had my brothers and sister he was over the moon to have an heir who was his flesh and blood. And since the second born was my brother James the 4th, he was to lead the gang when my father could not, even if he was 6 years younger than me. I was kept in the shadows, I was the baggage that came with my mother.
If my father finds out where we are he'll kill me, not my mother. He loves my mom but when he looks at me I see something in his eyes, something evil.
