"Who are you?" He slurred. I stood frozen unable to say or do anything.
"Athena why the hell are you making so much noi-" Lucian approached from the hallway rubbing his eyes.
"What are you doing here?" Lucian gritted his teeth and pushed me behind him.
"Where's your mom?" The man shouted. This must be Lucian and Violets dad. He looks about 40 years old and looks so much like Lucian it's scary.
"She's out." He says angrily. I can tell Lucian really doesn't want his dad here.
"Well when will she be back?" The man said quite loudly and I worried he would wake up Violet.
"How the hell am I supposed to know?! She's your wife asshole!" Lucian said matching his tone.
"Watch yourself boy!" The man shouted at him, okay that was enough because who would have to deal with a screaming baby? Me, that's who.
"Shhh." I try and hush them and the both of them give me unamused look.
"I don't want to wake Violet up." I whispered.
"And who are you supposed to be?" The man asked in a full tone. I guess my shhh didn't give him the message.
"I babysit Violet." I tell him and he squints his eyes looking at the large blue shirt I'm wearing.
"And who's shirt is that?" He asks and I'm about to give him the whole story about the spit up but Lucian steps in.
"Is none of your business now leave." He says and pushes his dad towards the door.
"Have your mom call me." He says and Lucian pushes him out the door. Lucian walks back to me and crossed his arms his chest.
"What are you doing up?" He asks me suspiciously.
"I couldn't sleep so I did the dishes." I told him.
"Yeah I don't think I can sleep after that." He says as he runs his hand though his hair. I look at the baby monitor to see Violet is now awake and wailing.
"Dammit!" I whisper yelled to no one in particular, I run to her room and ignore the fact that Lucian is following.
I pick her up and see that it's almost 2 in the morning. I walk her around the room to try and calm her down but nothing seems to work.
"What's wrong with her?" Lucian asks in the darkness.
"I think she misses her mom." I tell him and I can tell that he rolled his eyes even though the room is only lit up by a night light.
"Tough luck." He says and walks towards Violet and I when all of a sudden I had an idea.
"Would your mom be okay with it if we drove around for a while?" I asked.
"I don't think she really cares but why, it's 2 am?" He asks. Babies usually fall asleep in cars after a bit of driving.
"I'm think that would help her sleep." I told him and he let out a groan.
"Please, you won't get any sleep either way but at least if she's asleep you don't have to hear he cry." I begged him and he stays quiet for a bit.
"I'll start the car." He says with no emotion.
I wrap Violet up in a blanket and give her some socks. I grab the diaper bag and head down the stairs and into the garage. I buckled her into her car seat as Lucian adjusts the heat.
Violet is still crying softly as we drive through the city. We drive to an area that looks familiar, then I realized we are at my apartment.
"I figured you could get some of your stuff so you don't have to wear my shirt to school tomorrow, I figured no one would see me at this hour." He said again with no emotion.
"Thanks I'll be right back." I say and shut the door softly. I push the door open, mom didn't lock it.
The apartment was basically empty except for my room. I grab my large duffel bag and stuffed basically all my clothes into it. I grabbed another bag for my shoes and grabbed my school books and my jacket. Lastly, I picked up the picture frame of me around with siblings. I was twelve and they could barely walk or talk yet. I look so happy so lively. I stuff the picture in my bag and zip it shut.
I quickly make my way down the apartments front steps. I open the door to the car and slide in. Lucian looks exhausted, he has dark circles under his eyes and his hair is all tousled. He looks at me and then back at Violet she was now asleep. Thank god.
Without warning Lucian speeds out of the neighborhood and into the streets which cause me to hit my head on the dashboard.
"What the he-" I began to say but Lucian beats me to it.
"I had to get out of there, sorry." He says and I can see the corner of his lip twitch, he thought it was funny. I hit his shoulder and leaned back into the seat. I hadn't worn shoes so I curled up on the seat and leaned my head against the window.
"I'm sorry my dad is walked in like that." Lucian said breaking the silence.
"It's not your fault." I said and he lets out a sigh .
"Still he's an ass, who not to mention woke up Violet." He said and we both laughed quietly to make sure we didn't wake her up again.
"To be fair, you woke her up too." I said with a smile.
"Ok fine I'll give you that." He said giving in and for a second I thought maybe he didn't hate my guts even though I lied.
"What's your dad like? I mean your real dad." He asks me.
"I don't know I've never met him. He ditched my mom." I told him.
"Dad's can suck for sure." He says as he focuses on the road.
"For sure." I say and yawn. I put my head back against the window and felt the cold glass press against my cheek.
All I remember is seeing the bright moon against the dark night sky before drifting into a much needed sleep.
