September 31, 331 B.C.
As I sit in my tent writing this, I think upon what has happened since I wrote last. We crossed the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, and captured the land between them. Darius took his troops out of Babylon, the Persian capital, and moved them up to the plains of Gaugamela north of Babylon. We took after him and his new army as fast as we could go and are in Gaugamela now. Our scouts reported the Persian camp just a few miles away from us and advised Alexander to attack in the dark. He refused to ‘play dirty’ and decided to attack in the morning.
Oh, there goes the ‘lights-out’ bell. All lanterns are to be extinguished and there is to be no more talking! The battle is tomorrow!
