The day was coming to an end as the sun began to set on the horizon. Fallen pirates started to emerge from their hideouts to scavenge for supplies in the wastes of the cosmodrome.
As a dreg looked around its eyes fell onto a flickering light in the distance, the dreg stopped what it was doing and stared being blissfully ignorant. Suddenly its head erupted with ether spilling onto the floor followed by the loud sound of a gunshot echoing through the air. A fallen captain roared and all fallen in the area took cover, but just before the captain could get down, a scatter grenade broke its shields followed by a throwing knife penetrating its skull. A hunter came into view as the captain's body fell to the ground walking towards the remaining fallen crew. The fallen opened fire, trying their best to kill their attacker. The hunter drew a hand cannon engraved with gold from his belt and killed the crew quickly with a fan of the hand cannons hammer. Each fallen head exploded with ether before they fell, the hunter continued on just walking. The hunter spoke, "so? How many are we at now?" Asking his ghost
"Three hundred and twenty seven," she replied. "You know we were just assigned to do a scouting patrol right Echo?"
Echo laughed, "I know but it gets really boring out here! Plus after what they tried a few years back, I think they deserve it Isabel."
Isabel sighed, "I suppose they do."
Not long ago a great battle at Twilight Gap occurred where the fallen tried to invade the Last city on Earth. Thankfully the invasion was held off by the Guardians, and although it had been many years since the invasion attempt it was still fresh in many people's minds. Echo was resurrected a couple of years before it, although he didn't fight in the battle because he was still a little green. Killing fallen on patrol is what he does to make up for it and to make sure they don't get a chance to try something like that again. Normally Echo only kills about fifty fallen every time he goes out but the hunter Vanguard Cayde-6 wanted him to kill a little extra due to increased fallen activity.
"Hey Echo?" Isabel said "Your getting a call from the tower."
"From who?" Echo asked
"It's from Cayde."
"Well put him through," Echo said as he sat down by a rock.
"Hey Echo! How's it going out there with the fallen?" Cayde asked.
"Let's just say that the increased activity you wanted me to check out won't be much of a problem anymore."
"Yeah that's what I like to hear! Did I ever tell you I think you're one of my best hunters?"
"You tell that to all of us Cayde.
Only because it's true! But anyway how many fallen did you get out there today?"
"Three twenty seven."
"Three twenty seven! Damn, I wish I could get out of this tower. I'd personally try and double that number myself," Cayde laughed.
"But uhh... hey on a serious note I need to ask a favor from you Echo."
"What's up?" Echo said a little puzzled by the sudden change in tone.
"Well you know how Guardians are these days right? You just get resurrected by your ghost and you're basically thrown into a whole new world and have to just wing it ya know? Not many of these new lights have any proper teachers. Most are just self taught."
"What are you getting at here Cayde?"
"Well...I just got two new hunters in here at the tower and-"
"No."
"Hey Echo c'mon just hear me out, we need more experienced Guardians these days to teach these new lights the ropes and I think you're well suited for it. I wouldn't just go to any other random hunter."
Echo responded quickly. "Cayde I don't know a thing about teaching as it is and I'm not really looking for a fireteam right now. Besides I'd probably get them killed or something!"
"Hey calm down I'm not telling you to take them into a raid or anything and it's not like you'll be teaching them forever alright? I just need you to show them the ropes okay. Plus who knows, maybe you'll teach them just as well as Saladin did Zavala and Shaxx."
"Yeah and look how that turned out." Echo said
"Look, like I said it's just for a bit. Then they'll be out of your hair."
A long pause went by, then finally Echo took a deep breath and sighed. "Fine, I'll do it."
"Haha! See! I knew you'd come around! I owe you a drink for this one," Cayde laughed.
"You owe me a lot more than just a drink," Echo muttered.
"Well I'll meet you back at the tower, and I'll get those two hunters ready for you, Cya." And just like that Cayde ended the call.
"Wow," Isabel said. "I can't believe you just agreed to that!"
Echo sighed again, he couldn't believe it either, "Yeah, yeah let's just get back to the tower."
Isabel transmatted Echo's sparrow and they took off back to their ship.
