I could still feel the sting of the brass in my palm. I was in prison wishing to be with my family again, and yet I left them.
Was I foolish ?
After leaving my house I caught up with Justin and together we spent hours upon hours looking for Demetrius but came up unsuccessful. I hadn't understood why he ran away, what was so bad about his eyes ? Yes they were strange but that didn't give him permission to run away.
Justin and I gave up and decided to rest, if we didn't find him now there wasn't a point in looking still. There were plenty of vacant houses within the neighborhood we were in which so happened to be my own, I still wanted to be close to my family just in case I changed my mind or them with theirs.
We crossed onto the sidewalk looking at the same one story house. It was in pretty bad shape which meant it would attract no one new. The paint peeled all over the front accompanied by spots of soot drawn out across the front. The shingles hung off the roof in odd places and some were missing altogether. Glass from the broken windows littered the yard creating a shiny wonderland.
"Not quite my taste but it'll do," Justin said.
We both walked up the crumbling porch steps. He pushed open the door which I noticed had a broken lock.
The smell of heavy metal filled my nose, it was such a strong smell but I couldn't find the source.
The entry hallway walls were covered in pictures of a happy couple. They posed in various places of the world with their smiling faces, places I've only heard of.
Then I moved into the living room. The splintered wood from the coffee table was used to barricade the backdoor; I could only imagine why. The couch had been mangled and torn to pieces, it's cotton insides were scattered across the carpet.
"Something happened here," I whispered.
"Yeah," he agreed. "And I don't think they left willingly."
I glanced over at him, he was running his fingers over the dried blood smeared across the kitchen walls. It was horrifying. Whatever was here before us sought to hurt these people, it was it's only intent.
Justin and I spent the next hour or so searching the rest of the house for any clues leading to the disappearance of the couple. Then we decided to clean up our new home and barricade the rest of the windows.

I collapsed on the floor of one of the two bedrooms. I ran a hand through my hair and sighed. I could feel the rumble of thunder beneath my feet. My body tensed and my fingers trembled. I felt afraid but I couldn't remember the memory behind it.
Justin left about four hours ago wanting to find food and try for Demetrius again. I stayed because I didn't want to get caught in the rain. Thunderstorms were my weakness although I couldn't remember why.
The rain pelted the window softly, one by one, getting harder as the storm progressed. I squeezed my eyes shut trying to rid myself of the terrible noise.
I wanted to be reassured that everything was alright that I would be alright. I couldn't even think about sleep at a time like this.
"Make it stop !" I shouted. I covered my ears hitting the back of my head against the hard wall. I never felt so weak in my life. This was the lowest of the lows.
The door swung open and Demetrius stood at the door shirtless rubbing his eyes, I must have woken him up.
"What the hell is your problem ?"
I stopped my trembling just enough to glance up at him. "It's nothing go away." I tucked my chin back into the folds of my arms.
"It is the storm is it not ?" He asked quizzingly. Demetrius walked over to the spot where I was huddled and crouched down.
