I sat on the couch quietly as the others talked amongst themselves. My fingers twitched slightly. My body was still trying to register what had just happened to me. I should have died, the electricity was too strong for an average person to handle, but then again there were three other people who experienced it also.
"I'm afraid...for him", Margaret said gravely. She ran a hand through her limp hair. She spoke as if I wasn't in the room.
My ears perked up to her words. "You shouldn't be ." I stood up a bit too fast causing me to sway slightly. Benson reached for me but I smacked his hand away. "I'm fine."
Mr Howard glanced back at me, his eyes appearing much more darker than usual. "We can't help you, as much as I'd love to say we know what to do...."
I didn't want anyone's help, it was quite possible for me to do it myself. "I don't need your help, I can handle it."
"Hey I know you want to be independent or whatever you choose to call it but you can't do it by yourself", Benson sighed.
I chuckled and my body jerked slightly. "Says who ?" I shuffled to the front door and opened it.
"Where are you going ?" Margaret questioned whipping around to face me.
"For a walk."
Benson shook his head. "You're not going alone, not after what just happened. I'll go with you."
He wasn't going to let me do anything by myself, Benson didn't trust me for some reason and I couldn't figure out why.
Mr Howard cleared his throat. "I'll er tag along also."
"I suppose you want to go too Margaret", I scoffed. "It'll be a great family outing."
She shrugged pulling her jacket closer to her body. "I think I'll pass Alex."
I nodded and returned to the doorknob. I exited to house with two noisy men talking behind me.
I walked slightly faster to get a bit farther from them. I could hear them talking about sports, I wasn't really into sport; I wasn't into a lot of things they talked about.
A sharp pain ran through my neck and I grabbed it instantly. I could feel it throbbing in my neck, burning, taunting me.
"Everything ok Alexander ?", Mr Howard asked.
I winced in pain rubbing the injection spot. "Everything's peachy."
"What is that thing anyway ?"
I shrugged. "Who knows, but it doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon." I dropped my hand as the pain subsided focusing on the path ahead.
The terrain switched to grass and I could relax. The tall grass swallowed my legs whole, the only thing that could be seen on me was my hips and everything above them.
"Oh Alex..." Benson whispered softly as he realized where he was.
I had been the only person to continually return to the Fields after they were burned down, everyone forgot about it...except for me. I stopped abruptly and sat down in the patch of dead grass.
"Why did you come here ?" Benson's fists were balled tightly and his brows were furrowed angrily.
"You didn't have to come." I rested my head on the ground and placed my hands behind it for support.
Mr Howard scratched his head. "Calm down Benson and have a seat." He grunted while joining me.
Benson loosened his fists but stood standing, he was completely irrational. "Why would you ever want to come back here Alex, it's like you're completely blind to what happened."
