Leaning towards the bus window, I watched the bushes and trees passing by in a blur with the excitement level matching a five year old that had just seen a dragon coming out of the big three dimension movie screen, but yet the ever-enthusiastic heart of mine could not match the zeal radiating the face of the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. It gave me a new joy knowing that Sonia was rejoicing the trip. It had been only half an hour since we had started, but it felt like the journey had been bound by eternity. The thrill and excitement were commendable. It was something meant to happen. Fortunately, the meet with Sonia's mother on the previous day went smooth and better than I had had ever expected. Her sister and I had become a great acquaintance and her mother found my behavior impressive and agreeable, something that had approved me as Sonia's friend. She had even invited me to her home for a supper, which I had to decline though reluctantly. I was happy for the accidental meet in the mall. At least it had made me secure a small place in her life. Sonia was treating me better than she had ever treated.
Maybe she was proud of the way I have behaved. My heart swelled. I felt special with her sitting adjacent to me. The journey felt exquisite.
"Surya, look at the sun! It feels so good to watch it melt down the horizon. I have never seen such beauty in my life." Sonia smiled, her cheeks picking up the shade of red. The chilly wind had started to spread its effects as she rested her head back on the leather seat. The first time I had seen her without any novels clutched in her hands. Her spectacles rested inside its case in her handbag as she adored the beautiful nature, rather than some words printed over a paper.
"I have never seen such beauty in my life either. It is mesmerizing indeed!" I complimented in a mere whisper. The huskiness in my voice sure had told her that I was talking about her and not the sun because her cheeks had picked up a deep shade of scarlet. Appreciatively, the on and off relationship I was having for months had converted me from a simple nerd to a Romeo and that I could able to draw a few pick up lines at any moment. The partial credit goes to the boys who had made sure the second chance would not slip off my palms and I would keep my lady entertained enough.
The lame attempt of flirting with Sonia earned me a light slap on the shoulder while the lady mentioned, shook her head, a small smile had curled her lips upward as she darted her eyes back on the setting sun. "Ouch! What was that for? I was only agreeing!" I faked complained, rubbing my shoulder, enjoying her blush and the moments. It was really peaceful there.
"I know what you were talking about." Sonia smiled, tying her shoulder length hairs into a ponytail. "And don't try to flirt with me! Just because mommy has allowed you to be around me, it doesn't mean she has named my future with you. Stay in your limits!" she reprimanded, but the scolding had little to no effect on me. I was determined to express myself and nothing was going to stop me. I wanted to make that trip memorable. I was looking forward to all the treasures that were going to be unveiled.
"That she will do soon. Did you not hear the way she and your sister were praising me? Did you not see that they adore me? They consider me a family already or they hadn't had given me your responsibility! I know they are flattered by my charm!" I boasted while the boys passed me a sly look and I knew they were hearing through our conversation and agreed upon the way I was leading it.
"Hah! You wish! She has just told you to be around me so that I would not end up falling in any trouble. It wasn't any responsibility Surya. You are daydreaming." Sonia retorted. I could see she was annoyed, but I was not going to stop. It was cute bickering and I was satisfied that at least I was having her undivided attention. It was a couple's thing. Wasn't it?
"Keep feeding lies! I won't mind if that puts your heart at ease, but you and I both know that they have trusted me with you. Very soon she would accept me as her son-in-law. I can picture her playing with a small Sonia while I would play with you." I teased Sonia while she shook in her head piqued. The arguments were something I had missed in the past few months. I know I was pushing her buttons and the consequences would be drastic, but god was at my side. Before she could raise a cry of dismay, our faculty had already announced that we had reached the airport were required to get down of the bus. That stopped out bickering as we got engaged in handling our baggage. I helped Sonia with her luggage while Ayaan had taken care of my bags. Muttering a polite thank you, Sonia got down of the bus as I walked slowly in the queue with Ayaan tailing after me.
"You are doing amazing Sur! That's the spirit of my boy. I am so proud of you." Ayaan patted my bag hanging on my shoulder; the sentence was uttered in an I-am-a-proud-father tone, which told me he was equally serious and kidding. The boys nodded their approval as I stepped out of the bus with a small smile.
"Now listen!" Ayaan said, catching mine and the boys' attention. He took a pause while the rest of us watched him curiously. He had picked my attention the most out of all others and I waited patiently for him to speak. We stood in a circle and after a long silence of a few minutes, he said. "I will christen your children!" the boys burst into fits of laughter while I gapped at him opened mouthed.
"You dickhead!" I yelled; few students standing near us gave us a bewildered look when I launched at Ayaan, nearly choking him, but the boys pushed me away. They could not stop chuckling. "I thought you were narrating a strategy." I huffed an annoyed breath, living him on mercy while he choked on his laughter, delivering a mischievous wink.
I gave him a look that said I-am-done-with-your-bullshit and started towards the arrival gates, joining the line with a few other students. Our class teachers, Mrs. Neha Malpani was giving instructions. I heard for the long statements of dos and don'ts for a few minutes, but then zoned out as I searched for a particular face among the pool of many.
"Shh Sur! Have you brought protection or are you going to do it bare?" Ayaan whispered in my ears while the boys tried hard to stop chuckling. I elbowed him in the ribs, faking attention on what Mrs. Malpani was saying. Alas! With Ayaan hanging by my side, it was nearly impossible. "Dude! Enter slowly the first time, and then pick up a rhythm. Ask her if she is comfortable." Ayaan continued and it became hard for the boys to control their laughter. They had almost laughed, but disguised it in a cough at the mean moment, earning a hard look from the teacher. "She would scream or maybe cry. It hurts the first time, you see. It may become unbearable, but don't take it out. Let it be there, eventually, she will get used to of your size and would enjoy."
"Don't take out what?" Mihir questioned, faking innocent, playing alone with Ayaan in his dirty conversation while I tried my best to ignore the idiots.
"Penis man! Penis!" Harsh replied dragging the 'p' and's' naughtily. The hushed commotion had caught our class teacher's attention as she had already avoided the mischief on the previous time. "Mr. Malviya, what are you and your friends talking about? Would you mind sharing it with us?" Mrs. Malpani asked, catching the boys off guard. The sudden scolding had few heads turn our way, including Sonia's as they gave us questioning looks.
"PEN-" Mihir had almost exclaimed, but Ayaan had shut him in middle. It was my turn to enjoy their bewildered state.
"Pens madam, ink pen! Mihir was asking if he could borrow a pen." Ayaan covered up while I tried my best to suppress the chuckle coming out of my mouth.
"What do you need a pen for? I am saying something serious. You must pay attention to what am I saying, rather than asking a silly pen for no reason. I am warning you and all the students! We will not endure any bad behavior. All students must follow all the rules and norms published in your handbook. No rude behavior would be tolerated!" Mrs. Malpani announced in a rude tone, uttering "understood!" in a loud pitched voice in the end, on which everyone nodded.
Then an announcement for boarding the plane could be heard in distance and we were asked to walk in a line with our passport and boarding pass collected in a bunch by our teacher who handed it to us when we went inside the waiting launch. The conversation and mischief between the boys had never settled, but I was least affected by that. I had caught sight of my Sonia sitting quietly by our teacher's side and soon I joined her, leaving the champagnes to hang out among themselves.
