Grade Four
To say that Cal was mad about what happened last year was an understatement.Which fuel him more to argue with April Lake.
"I'm not the one who cried over a picture!"
"I'm not the one who looked like a fool and still has glitter in their head!"
That one struck him right in the heart still. Even if it has been a year.
"I didn't fuss over when an orange peel landed on my head!"
"Well I wasn't the one who lost a whole bunch of Connect Four games and was a sore loser!"
"I am not!"
"Yes you are!"
"No!"
"Yes!"
"NO!"
"YES!"
"WHAT IS GOING ON IN HERE!" The teacher came in walking in the midst of our arguing.
Immediately Cal and April stopped their bickering.
"Class, sit back in you seats. Cal. April. Outside now." The teacher said strictly.
April and Cal walked out of the classroom and Cal couldn't help but blame April for them getting in trouble.
If only she hadn't stepped on his shoelaces. They were a new pair of shoes and they had got dirty. She did that on purpose.
The teacher filled them behind them and shut the door behind her.
"What happened?"
"April started it first!" Cal pointed at her.
"I said I didn't mean to step on you shoes!" April defended herself.
The teacher silenced them with a glare.
"This is not how I expect you two act. You are grade fours. Not kindergarteners."
"You shouldn't insult kindergarteners." April stares at Ms. Belltheny.
Ms. Belltheny sighs a long sigh. "Anyways I want you two sit outside and think over your actions and about what you did wrong. When you both apologize to other I'll let you both in the classroom. I want this to happen before recess or I'll end up telling your parents."
Cal didn't like this idea of sitting with April alone.
"I really am sorry for stepping on your shoes. I didn't mean to." April said. She was sitting at the opposite side of the hallway from me with her back turned against me.
That was something Cal had not expected. An apology from April Lake.
Cal was left staring at the wall with his mouth ajar.
"Look, I know I might have stepped over the line last year with the-glitter and I'm sorry. But you should apologize for scribbling over my picture. You went over the line as well." April said and didn't say anything for the next few minutes.
Cal didn't like how April had admitted to her mistakes so easily and how she even seemed sincere. It took him a few more seconds before he gave in.
"Yeah I guess we were both wrong. I apologize for scribbling all over your picture."
Silence.
"Hey want to make an agreement?" April ask.
"About what?" Cal questions that they would ever be able to make an agreement.
"We both agree that after this conversation that we still hate each other. Let's face it. I don't think we like each other anymore than we did a few seconds ago. Except this time we don't cross any boundaries. What ya say?"
Cal ponder at what she said and thought it was quite logical an reasonable.
"Sure. I agree." He says and makes his way towards the door to the classroom.
"Wait!" Cal hears April say.
Cal turns around and sees April walk towards him with her arm extended to him.
"Let's shake on it. It doesn't mean anything if you don't shake on it." She says.
Cal looks at her hand before taking it.
"We have the right to hate each other." He says.
"Without stepping over boundaries." She adds.
"I hate you." Cal says.
"I hate you." April says.
