Over the past few months, you managed to warm up to the pharaoh. He was very kind, humble and compassionate. Most would consider him to be a loner, but that's what made him special. Atem liked being kept to himself. Unlike other kings who would brag about their looks and money, he took care of his people.
You went through routine before heading to your room, incredibly exhausted from the day. Upon arrival, you found a letter laying on your bed. Suspicious of who it was from, you slowly picked it up.
"Calixta, I thank you for your time in protecting the palace. Truly, I feel blessed by the gods to have an amazing royal guard. I also consider you a friend for all you have done for me. As a pharaoh, it is hard to trust, but you once again, have given me a reason as to why I should.
From, ~A"You felt honored by the letter Atem left you. You chuckled at your thoughts, 'I'm glad his handwriting is better than my chicken scratches'.
It warmed your heart to know you meant that much to the king. But yet, a little part inside of you wished he cared more, in a sense of love. You sighed. Who were you kidding? the pharaoh would never feel that way for you, it was absurd. You tucked the letter away in the bag you had previously carried when you arrived at the palace.You tucked that bag into an even more secure place. You still had trust issues. Lastly, you tucked yourself into bed. Once you looked over to blow out your candles, you spotted a beautiful red rose in small crystal vase on your banister. You smiled at the thought of Atem and before falling asleep.
~~~~~~~~~~later that night~~~~~~
You squirmed in bed. Your face scrunched up in displays of pain. In the middle of the night, you arose from your nightmare.
'What the hell was that?'
Once you woke up, you found yourself drenched in sweat. In the nightmare, Atem was injured while fighting Bakura. Although you did not see Bakura, his white hair was shown, with an unclear visual. Atem had gotten stabbed in your dream. It was a terrible sight for you as he slowly died in your arms. You couldn't help but cry. The thought of losing him hurt more than physical pain itself. As the nightmare replayed In your head, you felt something was wrong. 'Atem!' your thoughts exclaimed. Instantly, you stood from your bed and ran after Atem's room.
Opening the door, you spotted the king sleeping peacefully. Soft white silk covered his lower half. You blushed. His smooth defined muscles were on full display.
You looked closer, taking note of something black laying against the pharaoh's backside. It quickly perked up upon the sight of you. It was a cat! It hopped off the bed, gently nuzzling you with its head. You scratched it softly, allowing it to purr in your hand.
The king began to stir from the commotion you created. He furrowed his eyebrows, before fluttering his eyes open. Atem cleared his throat and gathered his bearings at the sight of you,
"Calixta, is something wrong?"
You let out a sigh of relief,
"I just wanted to make sure you were safe my pharaoh. Please, excuse me for coming in"
not wanting to worry the king, you mentioned the letter he had brought you,
"Earlier I saw a little something on my bed. Was that from you?"
You teased the king to distract him a bit. This caught him off guard,
"Oh, you had found it. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it"
The king rubbed his neck in embarrassment. You thought he looked adorable due to his hairs sticking up in all directions. The deepness of his voice was even greater, mesmerizing you as he spoke,
"It was very lovely my pharaoh, you should write more. I appreciate your clean writing"
"I may be able to show you someday"
"Please care to"
You continued to pet the cat. It seemed to really like you,
"My pharaoh is this your cat?"
The pharaoh glanced at the furry animal, smiling softly,
"Yes. That is Bastet, my father had given her to me as a gift when I was fourteen."
You hummed in reply, smiling at the cat. It was very beautiful. As you enjoyed the comfortable silence with the king, you couldn't stop the feeling that something was wrong. In your dream, you had seen a symbol of a snake on a vase appear several times. You looked at Atem,
"My king do you have any vases?"
Atem furrowed his eyebrows, confused at your sudden request. If he were honest, he was still confused as to why you came in. Nonetheless, he did not mind. He pointed to a vase that sat in the center of the room,
"It was recently brought in by the servants, they insisted it was from a royal"
"I see", you said looking the vase over.
You lowered your ear to listen closely. Faintly, you heard the sound of snakes slithering. You gasped bringing out your trusted dagger. You proceeded on letting the snakes out, stabbing every one of them to death. Bastet stood in front of the dead snakes, hissing. The king's face hardened at the sight,
"How did you know of this?"
"My king, please trust me when I say this, but I had seen the symbol of the snake in my nightmare tonight. That is the reason I felt the need to check on you."
The pharaoh ran a hand through his hair, heaving a sigh,
"I believe you, Calixta"
The king paused to pull himself together,
"But who would commit this traitorous act? Many are against me"
You looked at the pharaoh in all seriousness,
"It was Bakura"
