Betrayal
Nirvana's POV
"Let me out !!!!!!!! Please !!!!! Let me go !!!!! Maasi!! Ruhi !!! Please!!!!!! Open the door!!!!!!!!!" I scream my lungs out. My hands are bruised because of the constant banging on the door. I thrashed myself on it to barg out but it doesn't help. "Somebody please let me go....." I slide down against the door. I can taste my tears on my lips. Dry ones stick on my cheeks. Why does my life keeps going in circles? Every time I feel I am happy, something knocks my breath right away and tells me 'Not yet'. But this, this is beyond my imagination. How did I end up in this room for the last 14 hours, shouting, screaming and crying? I have nothing. No phone, no laptop, just nothing to help myself out. Rehan went away, locking me in my room. He said he will talk to his father about our marriage and get it done as soon as possible. Does he not get it that I don't want to marry him? I don't love him. I can't breathe properly and my head is aching so badly. I try to shout again but end up coughing. My throat hurts now, I need water. I was about to call again when the door opens. "Ruhi?" I adjust my eyes in the darkness. She walks towards me with a glass of water and a plate. "You need to eat" she said looking away. "I need to go" I said. "I can't help you. It is just a matter of time" she whispered. "Time? What? What are you doing to me?" I stuttered. "Your marriage" she said before getting up. "Ruhi wait !! Please, please!! I beg of you. Please let me go. I can't marry him. Please. Just let me go and I promise I will never come back to" I plead but she cuts me off "You shouldn't have come anyway" she said looking down at me. Maasi enters the room "What is going on here?" she asked looking between me and Ruhi. "Nothing" we muttered in unison. She came and yanked me on my feet by pulling my hair. "Listen to me very carefully. If you shout again. I will cut your tongue off. It's your face and body that Rehan wants, with or without that smart mouth" she pushes me on the bed. "The neighbors are getting suspicious. So my sweet little Vani. Keep your mouth shut. Or else stay locked" she said before exiting the room. "Please Vani. Don't create a scene. You don't know them, they can go to any extent to keep you here" Ruhi said. "I will call the police" I threatened. "And how will you do that? You don't have a phone. And what makes you think that they will listen to you? Vani, Rehan is the son of the Sarpanch. They bribe the police on a regular basis" she stated as a matter of factly.
(Sarpanch is the village headman)
I am not surprised really now. This boy is literally buying me by exchanging a monetary deal here. What more can I expect from his family? But I have to do something. I have to do something soon or else I will end up here and nobody will ever come to know, what exactly happened to me. I drink water after smelling it and don't eat. God knows what these people could have mixed in this food. The first thing I have to do is to inform my friends. I have to call Anna, since she was not replying to my texts. I hope, she is fine. My aunt and cousin are having their dinner. "Where are you going?" My aunt asks from the table. "I need to use the washroom" I said and walked away after she continues eating. I went upstairs, but instead of going to the washroom, I turned towards Ruhi's room. I quickly scan the room for her phone. It rests on the bed side table. After a quick glance downstairs, I type Anna's number. With each ring, I am growing impatient. "Pick up....Pick up Ann" I mumble. "Hello?" she finally answers. "Hello.. Hello Anna... Thank God you picked up. Anna I need your help. Anna I am in India, in my village. They are not letting me leave. They are forcing me in a marriage..." Anna cuts me off. "Isn't that a good thing? I mean now that you will be there, married. I can have everything all to myself" she says in a relieved voice. "Ann? Anna I need your help" I force my words out of my silent sobs. "I don't think I want to help you anymore princess" she hung up. I'm out of words, disbelief and the extreme pain of betrayal runs across me. It is only when, I hear the moving of chairs across the floor, I realise, I don't have enough time to call Fatty or Mill. I delete the call from the call history before placing the phone back. I rush out of the room and run straight to my room. I close the door behind me before grief takes over me. I don't know what hurts more. The idea that I am stuck here, helplessly or that out of all the people, Anna betrayed me. My best friend betrayed me.
