"HE'S GIVEN UP," said Father to Namjoon as they drove away from Jungkook's. "Locked away like a prisoner."
Yoona watched from the comfort of her car seat as Namjoon reached over and held Jin's hand. Little Yoona hadn't the slightest idea what was going on, yet she felt their pain.
Father regarded her from the rearview mirror and forced a smile. "And how is our little girl?"
She only blinked, wondering why her eyelids were becoming heavy.
"She's tired," said Namjoon. "We still have to go to that label company."
"Oh shoot," Father said. "That's right. Well she'll just sleep through it. I don't think it will take that long."
Yoona couldn't help but drown out those words before slumber possessed her.
Once the infant came to, she found that she was still in her car seat, however, she was not present in the backseat of the car anymore. Instead, she rested on the floor, forced to look up at Father and Namjoon, who were sitting on two chairs in front of a furnished desk. They appeared to be talking to a man.
"I listened to your demos," said the man Yoona could not catch sight of. "We like them a lot."
Yoona noted that she had never seen Father's eyes light up so eagerly. "Wow. That means so much!"
Even Namjoon, who was usually dull in expression, had a sparkling gleam in his eyes. "So what are the conditions?"
"Nothing much," came the man. "We can start talking contracts next week. You said there was seven of you?"
Father's eyes flickered with hesitation. "Maybe six. My nephew, he's in a bit of a funk right now."
The man hummed in response. "Well show business doesn't wait so I hope you notify us soon. And what are you to each other? Friends? Cousins?"
Namjoon opened his mouth to speak, but before he could get a word in, Father was quick to say, "Partners, actually. We're dating."
Yoona wondered why Namjoon looked as white as the wall in the room.
"Dating? You two?"
"It's not like that," Namjoon cut in.
Father looked stunned. "Not like that?"
The man made a choking sound. "I'm not sure this is the right place for you after all. You'll probably find someone better somewhere else."
Father seemed very disheartened. "But you said--"
"I know, but we don't have any record deals to offer for your kind."
"Our kind?" Father asked incredulously.
"Jin," said Namjoon, "let it go. This isn't the place."
Yoona felt an ache as she watched her father well up with tears. "I suppose my kind is a faggot."
"Jin," Namjoon said a little harsher, "we're leaving."
Father did not follow his lead to get up. "Isn't that right, Mr. Chu?"
The desk was much too tall for Yoona to see Mr. Chu's expression, but even with her little understanding of the situation, she knew that Father had a way of causing people to stop talking for a long moment.
However, he recovered not long after and said, "It is best you leave, Mr. Kim. Before you cause more trouble."
Tears were falling down Father's face now. "Do you have a son, Mr. Chu?"
There was a pause. Then a soft no.
"Daughter?" That was also followed by a no. "Well if you ever do, I'd feel sorry for you. Because if that child turns out to be 'my kind,' I fear the worst out of you."
"Jin! That's enough!" Namjoon yelled.
Yoona flinched. After being so startled, she acknowledged it by crying.
Jin wiped his tears and picked up her car seat before heading out of the door.
Father wouldn't stop crying for the whole ride home.
"You blew our chances!" Namjoon said. "It was right there and you had to bring it up!"
Father shook his head, sniffling. "If we are not authentic with our world, how can we be a part of everyone else's?"
"Cut the philosophy crap, Jin. People like us are going to get no where if we continue to be open about our relationship. From now on, we are music partners and that is all! Do you understand?"
He shook his head again. "No. I won't do it."
"Then you're setting us up for failure. And all we're ever going to do is work minimum wage jobs for the rest of our lives! And Yoona? Our jobs combined won't be enough to give her a good life and you know it!"
"Yoona has parents like us who will sacrifice everything to give her a good life, okay? And we will find what we're looking for because we are honest with ourselves!"
"Unbelievable. You are so unbelievable."
"The only thing that is unbelievable is not believing, Namjoon."
