YOONA CONTINUED TO cry, frustrated at the lack of ways she could express her pain.
"Namjoon, get the car seat," said Father.
The world was a blur through her tears as she struggled to get enough air in her small lungs. Her tiny body shook in waves of shivers. She felt as if her throat was collapsing inside. She cried harder, the closest she could get to expressing her fear of the unknown.
Namjoon buckled her into the car. "We're going, caterpillar. You're just going to have to trust that we'll take care of you."
She looked at him. He met her eyes and then was left with a kiss on the head before his departure to the passenger seat.
Acute Leukemia was the first two words Yoona had heard as she began to regain consciousness. She opened one eye ever so slightly and quickly shut it once again when the ceiling lights sharply touched her cornea.
"It's the most common type of childhood cancer," came an unfamiliar voice.
"Cancer?" she heard Father choke out as if the word burned his throat to say it. "She's five months old, Doctor. How could this happen?"
She tried again. This time, her eyes were better able to focus after blinking a few times. She focused on her father's broad figure. Next to him was Namjoon running his fingers through his hair and hanging his head. In front of them was a tall man in a white coat and a sad look on his face. He glanced at her with pity and her little heart felt two times heavier than her own weight.
He looked back at Father when he asked, "What's the difference between acute and regular leukemia?"
The man in the white coat said, "Acute is the rapid development of immature cells rather than mature ones. It's a glitch in the DNA. It's going to be a difficult journey, but I think we caught it early enough."
"So what?" Father's voice grew thick with emotion. "Do I have to watch my daughter go through chemo?"
"There are many options, Mr. Kim," assured the white coat man. "We promise we will do everything we can. Right now, Yoona is going to have to stay with us in order for us to run some tests on her and make sure she gets everything she needs so she's comfortable as possible."
Yoona hadn't the slightest idea of what they were discussing, but she noticed her father crying and the only emotion she could process was sadness. So she cried too. Jin saw this and took her out of her car seat, held her over his shoulder, offering whispers of reassuring words, and kissed her head.
"The label called back," Namjoon said, staring at the dark screen of his Samsung. He stuffed it in the pocket of his coat, not wanting to be reminded of the device that enabled their dreadful transaction.
Jin was sitting beside him in the waiting room while Yoona was getting situated. He was staring down intently at his hands in his lap, as if they were whispering secrets only he could hear. Understandably, he was not present with his boyfriend.
Namjoon rested a hand on Jin's shoulder and the gesture brought him out of his headspace. Jin rested his eyes on Namjoon's. "Sorry. What did you say?"
Namjoon swallowed, having a last minute debate with himself if it was worth discussing at the moment. "I'll tell you later."
"Tell me now," said Jin. "I need a distraction."
"The label called," Namjoon gave in. "They'd be willing to work with us."
By the way Jin was watching him carefully, he could tell he knew there was a but.
Namjoon played with his thumbs. "They. . . want us to hide our relationship."
Jin's expression answered before his mouth did. "I'm not hiding, Namjoon."
"I'm—I'm not asking you to," Namjoon said. "I'll keep looking. Anyway, our label is the least of our worries."
Jin read his mind. "Yvette's message. If she's really in danger. . . We need to keep an eye on her 24/7."
Namjoon hunched over and tapped his foot repeatedly, anxious all of a sudden. "We'll need more information from her. We have to see her again."
"But she said—"
"I know what she said."
Jin leaned back and looked at the ceiling. "Can we risk it?"
Namjoon felt his eyes land on him when he didn't answer right away. Finally, he said, "It will be more risky if we don't know what we're dealing with."
"Rather. . . who we're dealing with," Jin rephrased.
"Exactly."
Jin held his hand tightly. Namjoon met his gaze. While he tried to remain strong, his brown eyes betrayed his true fear.
Namjoon held his hand back. "Nothing is going to happen to our daughter."
Jin seemed to relax slightly at that and offered a small smile. "You're right. It's going to take a lot more to break us at this point."
However, neither of them realized how intense life really would get to test that theory.
I will be doing shorter chapters, but I see this story clearly. I planned it out exactly and I know what is going to happen. I hope you guys don't hold a grudge for too long by the end of this story. Love you my Royals! Check out the new trailer! Get excited again!
