Point of View: Virgil, Third Person
Timeline: Flashback (cont.)

Hey Pat," Virgil lightly tapped Patton's shoulder, getting his attention. Patton looked up from washing the dishes, grinning brightly at Virgil. And if Virgil was anyone else he would've fallen for it; Patton's fake smile was all but identical with his real one if he tried hard enough. "Penny for your thoughts?"

Patton hesitated, but nodded, setting the plate down in the sink and turning off the water. He gestured towards the empty kitchen table, cleared of all the taco supplies from earlier. "What's wrong?  Are you okay?" Patton asked once they both were seated.

"Actually... I was going to ask you that," Virgil confessed, rubbing the back of his neck - a nervous habit.  "Are you okay? You're doing the thing, you know... hiding your feelings and stuff? What's bothering you?"

"Oh it's nothing big, honest," Patton lied smoothly.

Virgil raised his eyebrows, catching on instantly. "Oh really?" He returned, voice low and laced with obvious disbelief.  He crossed his arms over his chest.

That tone of voice made Patton wince.  No hiding feelings... you promised him... "No... but I - I guess not really?  It's nothing. I'm just... kinda disappointed...?"  Patton frowned, leaving his jumble of thoughts hanging in the air.

"Disappointed on Taco Tuesday? Blaspheme," Virgil teased lightly, trying to coax a genuine smile out of his friend.

Patton did indeed smile, but it was small. "Virgil have - have you ever loved someone so much that you - you almost felt like you couldn't breathe? And all that you want for them is to be happy, forever and always? And you want that for them sometimes... that it hurts to even imagine them falling in love with someone else?"

"... I'm sorry but... no," Virgil confessed, leaning closer to hug his friend. "Or at least not in the way that you mean."

Patton sighed, hugging back.  "It's okay," he mumbled into Virgil's shoulder.  He pulled back.  "Don't you have to leave for work soon?"

"Not yet.  My shift doesn't start until 8."

"... It's 8:05."

"SON OF A  -"
