Mr. Sui.
He's not quite what I anticipated, though I'm not certain what I thought he'd be like. Maybe I was expecting to see an eccentric man with an over the top personality and flamboyant mannerisms. Or maybe I was expecting a well-dressed man wearing a nice suit that makes his shoulders look broad, a sense of sophistication dripping from him. Then again, maybe I just expected some guy in plain blue jeans and a Polo shirt, but based on this place's appearance, I doubt the latter would be the case. Still, trying to picture what he'd look like versus seeing what he actually looks like differ more than I'd like to admit.
Mr. Sui is a tall, older man who is roughly in his early to mid-seventies with ripened features, though he seems to have aged well. His lips and under his eyes have deep laugh lines from years of smiling while his hair -which was most likely at one time lush ebony- is now different shades of silver and gray, but still thick and luscious in appearance. And despite being up in age, his posture is still that of a young man with his shoulders back and head held high, his slacks and white button-down shirt both fitting him nicely. This all, in turn, allows me to tell just how fit he is. He is by no means a spring chicken with rock-hard muscles, but I can tell he is toned and strong, most likely still doing his best to exercise and take care of himself. In all, he is not a bad or creepy looking man, but the image I constructed of him still doesn't fit.
I guess I'm taken so off guard because instead of being greeted by a cold and money hungry businessman, I've been met with a kind and sweet man. Ever since he caught me so that I wouldn't fall flat on my face, he's been nothing but sweet. After saving me from gravity, he brought me here to the café that Hiyori works at and bought me a coffee. And it doesn't seem like he's just being this way to keep me from taking legal repercussions. I feel that he's sincerely this kind. After all, Hiyori never mentioned anything negative about the man.
So, I'm just sitting here across from the fellow known as Mr. Sui, flashing my friendliest smile as possible as the waves crash against the shore across the street. Honestly, even though I gave up all hope of a potential job, I'm still slightly nervous. I have no logical reason for feeling this way, but I merely chop it up to me still harboring any previous anxieties from earlier. You know...from before I completely embarrassed myself in front of a once potential employer. Yeah...I think that's it.
"Let me once again apologize for startling you earlier, Miss L/N (your last name)," Mr. Sui repeats for what feels like the hundredth time since we exchanged pleasantries in his shop. "I had no intentions of frightening you."
I wave one of my hands dismissively and laugh halfheartedly, "Please, don't worry about it, Mr. Sui. It was an accident."
"Still," he smiles, "are you sure you're alright? That would have been a nasty fall."
I shrink into my seat and stammer, "W-well...l-luckily that d-didn't h-happen thanks to y-you, sir."
It's stupid for me to be acting this way. It's stupid for me to even be presenting myself in this manner. I know better. I know how to behave in front of people with higher authority than me. I was raised to maintain eye contact and speak clearly -keep your posture tall and confident. I was taught to answer when talked to and to always be polite. So, I feel utterly embarrassed and outside of myself to be reacting in this way.
"Well, at least you're alright," he continues, sitting back in his seat.
We're sitting at a table outside, listening as the waves roar and crash against the rocks on the beach with an umbrella shading us from the late morning sun. It still feels chilly, but the crisp air smells clean and fresh as it mixes with the café's perfume. Honestly, I find it all to be very pleasant and enjoyable, despite the oceanfront being quieter than the humming of Tokyo. Then again, this entire village is way quieter than all of the city.
"Hiyori tells me that you're interested in the position I'm offering," he adds, taking a quick sip of his coffee. His eyes bore into mine as he lifts a brow. "Is that still true?"
I ball my hands into fists on my lap and swallow, "Yes, it is...if I didn't ruin my chances, that is."
Mr. Sui makes a quizzical expression, asking, "Ruin your chances? How would you ruin your chances, Miss L/N?"
I shrug, "Well...after what happened at your boutique, I thought that...that maybe -"
Mr. Sui belts out a roar of belly laughter as he places a hand on his chest. A tint of blush dusts over his cheeks, matching his laughter. To be truthful, I'm a little taken back by his response. Was I somehow being comical? Did he find my response amusing? What had him reacting this way? Nothing in my upbringing has prepared me with the necessary tools to handle this situation. Nothing whatsoever. Still, all I can do is progress with the conversation.
"Excuse me, Mr. Sui...but what is it that you find so humorous?" I question, flashing a forced grin.
His laughter calms, his eyes once again meeting mine when he leans forward. He laces his fingers together and clears his throat, sighing, "Miss L/N, what happened earlier was, as you've already stated, an accident. You were reacting on instinct. I hold no judgment on anyone who reacts properly to a situation." He shifts his weight in his seat and shrugs, "Besides, we're all only human. We trip, we fall, we make messes, and we make mistakes. That's what we do -that's how we learn. No one is perfect. Not me, not you, not anyone. And if someone claims to be perfect, then they are living in a very sad reality."
"I'm sorry...I'm afraid I don't follow," I chuckle. "What does that mean?"
A kind and friendly smile lift Mr. Sui's lips as he replies, "It means that you are a human. It means that, despite what happened, you are allowed to make mistakes. It also means that you did not ruin your chances at this position. That is if you still wish to pursue it."
My eyes widen. After my reaction earlier, I thought I had lost all chances of this opportunity. I thought that I had screwed up. That was my original belief. However, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Excitedly, I beam, "Of course!" I quickly regain control over myself and clear my throat. "I mean, yes. Yes, of course, I'd be very interested.
"Good," he nods. "In that case, let's begin."
**Bello my lovelies! Now we've had more of an interaction with Mr. Sui (who is my own character). He seems very nice and is possibly gonna be Y/N's boss. Possibly. We gotta see what all happens next. But I still hope you're all enjoying this! I know it's still slow, but things will pick up, I promise. Anyway, thank you so much for all the support! Y'all are the best! You're the cat's pajamas! Wuv yous!! <3**
