"So, this is all that the position entails?" I ask, glancing up at Mr. Sui.
He nods, "That is correct, Miss L/N."
I scan him quickly before dropping my gaze to the paper he had handed me earlier. It is a description of the job I'd be working if I were hired. To my surprise, it's not a retail associate position like I originally thought. Instead, it's a slot for a security spot. Something I've never even considered before. Something that doesn't suit me. Something that is outside of my comfort zone. But it's still something.
It's still something and something is better than nothing.
"So, it's Monday through Friday from eight to five? What about weekends?" I question.
"I have someone who works part-time, so that's their day -the shop is closed on Sundays, of course," Mr. Sui answers. "And the position you're applying for would be fulltime."
"Good," I say. "Good. I was looking for fulltime. And the pay, you said it'll increase after six months?"
"Yes. Should you stay that long, that is," he replies.
I continue to read the paper. It might not be a job I've ever done before, but it looks promising. The hours aren't horrible, and they should allow me to collect a good pay, which is very generous for a security gig. The equivalent of twelve dollars and thirty-eight cents an hour is pretty decent for a girl with no university degree. Plus, after six months, that increases by a dollar. It might not seem like much, but I see it as me striking the lotto. However, there is one thing about this job.
It's not in Tokyo.
Sure, I could commute every day, but I'd have to get up at 5:30 and hustle from the bus. Then again, I could spend some extra money and just take a taxi, but that'll take a toll on my bank account. I'd practically be earning money just to spend it on getting to work. So, despite how great this opportunity looks, I'm beginning to question if it's worth it.
"You seem troubled," Mr. Sui observes. "Are you alright, Miss L/N?"
I let out a haggard sigh and bring my stare to his, shrugging, "This looks like a great opportunity. Really, it does."
"But?" he presses.
I chew on my lower lip. "But...it's a lengthy trip to get here."
"Oh? Where do you commute from?" he asks.
"Tokyo," I answer.
I'm waiting for it. I'm waiting for him to snatch the paper away and tell me I'm not right for the job. I'm waiting for his mask of hospitality to melt away and morph into anger. I'm waiting for disappointment to once again leave me hopeless. That's what I'm anticipating and bracing myself for.
"Tokyo?" he repeats, crossing his arms over his chest. "Tokyo is a wonderful place to live. Which district do you reside in?"
I fidget with my fingers. "Actually...as of now I don't really have a place I live at. I'm...I'm kind of just staying at a motel until I can afford an apartment."
I can feel the older man scan me before continuing, "You're living in a motel?"
I jump in my seat and defend, "Only temporarily! I-it's not a permanent arrangement, I swear!" My face reddens at my outburst as I bow. "I'm so sorry, Mr. Sui. Please forgive my rudeness."
Mr. Sui continues to observe me; his warm eyes still being met by a sincere smile. Even after my confession, he still hasn't chased me away or demanded I leave. If anything, he's still being nothing but beyond kind. Honestly, I'm stunned. I expected some sort of frustration or anger to come from him, but no. Nothing. He's still just as sweet as the moment I met him. It's disarming, in a way.
