Violet was concerned.
"We don't have time," Jared said, looking down the different crowded hallways.
"They won't go down these hallways, too crowded. Somewhere secluded. If they bump into more people they'll freak out more," Violet said, thinking fast.
"There!" Jared shouted, pointing. He grabbed her hand again and pulled her along, as they weaved inbetween people and mumbling whispered apologies as they reached the exit door into the alley.
They burst out and look wildly. It was empty, dirty and secluded. Who would hide here?
The smallest member of their five people party, that's who.
"Falcon?" Violet asked, getting near. Jared hissed, grabbing her before she got too close to the other girl, who was hiding inside a box.
"Don't," Jared said, gesturing to Falcon. "She'll startle and then what?"
Violet ran her hands through her hair. "What should I do?"
The box was shaking, violently. Moving abruptly, on the brink of breaking. It shook wildly from side to side sometimes but other times it would just stay still.
They could hear panting breaths inside, hyperventilation.
"Falcon? It's me, Violet... can I come closer?"
No response.
Violet inched closer, slowly, peeking into the box. The other girl was staring at her, but not at her. She was staring into space, hyperventilating, rocking, flapping her hands, shaking in a tiny ball.
"Hey?"
A large truck zoomed by at that time, honking a really loud and obnoxious horn. This gets to both Jared and Falcon as Falcon flinched back and even further away from the mouth of the box, hands over her ears now.
"No, no, no... no noise, see?"
She was acting like a child, and at this moment Violet could give up, but she swallowed hard.
"Do you want... do you want your headphones?"
"She didn't bring it," Jared said urgently.
"Want me to call your parents then?"
This simple statement has those eyes locked right onto her, but they were still not staring at her, like she was looking at something else besides her eyes. She shook her head fearfully, withdrawing even further...
"Nonono, it's okay!" Violet said, holding her hands out as if to placate Falcon. "No calling, then."
"This worked once," Jared said, crouching beside Violet to look in the box as well.
He began to hum the Cups song.
Falcon looked at him, then at Violet, as if the gears were turning in her head. It was almost like she did not recognize them, and it looked like the song was getting through to them.
She mouthed something. It made Jared pause and Violet frown.
"What?" she asked abrasively, and when Falcon shrunk back from her tone, she toned it down a little, "Sorry, can you repeat that?"
But Falcon had that withdrawn look again, and pushed herself further away from them both.
(Go away, don't hurt me)
