"Aw, god, my head!" I groaned aloud. "JARVIS? Time?"
"It is 2:54pm, sir." My ridiculously clever AI responded. What a night we had last night. I groaned again at the recollection of the night before. I dragged myself half-heartedly out of bed and had to grab quickly on to my bedside table to steady myself. My head felt as if it was on a roller coaster ride to hell. Oh, this wasn't a nice feeling at all. I mean, sure I get hangovers a lot, but this, this was the mother of all hangovers. Once my head steadied itself, I started making my way to the kitchen. I needed coffee. I was about half way to the kitchen when I literally bumped into the fun loving Captain Rogers. I would have fallen on my ass if it wasn't for his unnaturally quick reflexes.
"Watch where you're walking, Stark."
"You're in my house, Rogers. Stop acting like a little bitch." I snapped back, gripping my head tightly in my hands.
"Mature, Stark. If anything, you should be thanking me."
"Thanking you?" I snorted. "For what exactly?"
"You honestly don't remember how you even got into your bed last night, do you?" He rolled his eyes. "You and Doctor Banner drank enough scotch between the two of you to keep the army happy for a month." He spat. I shrugged.
"Banner needed it." I mumbled to myself. "Where is the big guy anyway?"
"He's in the lounge, I think-"
"Why are you so loud, Rogers?" I cut it, gripping my head tighter and squeezing my eyes shut. "You're whining about the amount I drank last night yet you don't even contemplate the idea of a hangover." I groaned again.
"I know you're hungover, Stark. I may have been born in the forties but I've seen enough hangovers to know one when I see one." He retorted bluntly. "As I was saying, Doctor Banner is in the lounge and I'm sure I seen Miss Potts in there too."
"Why's Pepper- You know what, I'll talk later. I need coffee." With that I stumbled off to the kitchen, passing by the lounge as I went. The door to the lounge was closed over but not completely, so I peered in briefly. Pepper was hugging Bruce. Huh. Pepper has already taken a liking to him. That's great. I carried on to the kitchen and poured myself a mug of black coffee. This house was far to bright, jeez. I need some asprin or something.
I stumbled back along to the lounge to ask Pepper for some asprin. When I got to the lounge it was just Pepper, no Bruce. She was sitting alone in the middle of the couch with a small smile on her face and she seemed to be drawn into a daydream. Making my way over to the couch to sit beside her, I stubbed my foot off of the coffee table and yelped in pain, making my presence in the know known.
"Oww, for fu-"
"Tony," Pepper laughed, "are you okay?" She asked sympathetically as she rose to her feet and helped me onto the couch. I pulled my foot up onto the couch and held onto it in a feeble attempt to sooth the throbbing pain.
"Yeah," I hissed through clenched teeth. "I'm fine. You don't have any asprin do you?" She looked at me quizzically and laughed.
"I'm not giving you asprin for a stubbed foot."
"It's not for my foot, it's to stamp out this bitch of a hangover so that I can actually get some work down." I informed her as I put my foot back down on the floor. It started throbbing at the contact with the floor but it wasn't nearly as sore as it had been. Pepper rummaged around in her bag at her feet and pulled out two asprin and handed me them along with a glass of water that was sitting on the table. I tossed the pills to the back of my throat and washed them away with the entire glass of water. "That'll make it much better," I said with a gentle sigh.
"Serves you right, Tony. You shouldn't have drank that much. I keep telling you-"
"Bruce was upset. It was either get him drunk or let him go out and do something he regretted doing." I pointed out, defensively.
"I think he done a lot more last night that he regretted." She said matter-of-factly.
"We didn't do anything that stupid. Actually that reminds me; JARVIS, make sure no one uses the toaster. In fact, just order a new one." I called out to my invisible AI.
"The toaster? What happened to the toaster?"
"We made poptarts last night."
"That would explain why Bruce was sleeping on a plate of half eaten poptarts but what did you do to the toaster, Tony?" Pepper's tone carried a warning.
"It wasn't cooking them fast enough and we couldn't see if they were cooked or not so-"
"Allow me Miss Potts. Mr Stark programmed me into the toaster to cook their savory treats quicker and to inform him when they were done. Mr Banner, however, then implanted the idea into Mr Stark's head that the toaster was, in fact, thirsty too." JARVIS chimed in.
"Yeah, thanks for that JARVIS." I grumbled.
"Please tell me you never put scotch in the toaster...?" Pepper held a hand against her face, her tone less than amused.
"Hey! It was Bruce's idea!"
"You are such a child. For one of the smartest people on the planet, you are an idiot at times."
"That's not fair! It was Bruce's idea!"
"I am sorry to interrupt, sir, but Director Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D is on the line." JARVIS added in.
"Oh, so now you have a problem with interrupting a private conversation, JARVIS." I retorted. "Sometime I thing you just like getting me into trouble."
"Grow up, Tony." Pepper barked with a roll of her eyes, before she got up and left the room. What the hell just happened?
"Sir," JARVIS pressed.
"Right, I'll take the bloody call, bring him up." A transparent screen dropped from the ceiling and Fury's face appeared on the screen, looking less than amused, as always.
"Stark." He greeted me bluntly. "You look like shit, rough night?"
"Yeah, something like that. What do you want?"
"To give you a heads up. There will be a woman arriving at the towers in the next hour. Her name is Morgan and she is Natasha's replacement."
"Jeez, Fury, you were quick to fill up her grave." I pointed out. "Natasha has barely even declared her resignation and you've already filled her space."
"Save it, Stark." Fury snapped. "She will be staying at the towers with you. It seems logical to keep the team together. In the mean time, I am holding you responsible for her. Keep her busy and not like that. She is the daughter of a British inventor, she's a little like you in that sense, almost matches you IQ too." Fury formed me. "Within the hour, Stark. Play nice." And with that little input the line went dead and the screen slid back up into the ceiling. Great. I'm on baby sitting duty.
