My hands were slipping off the bar.
I listen to the early boom of the cannon that echos runs down the dank hallways as I watch Velvet, a girl I barely even knew, let go of the bars that we were tightly gripping onto. I tried to grab her before she fell into the Capitol toxic that had been pooling on the floor, which we were both avoiding. Missing her hand, I watch helplessly as her screams, which match my own, are muffled by the viscous liquid that slowly eats away at her flesh until there is nothing left but bone.
Despite everything. I find myself wishing that the arena were prettier as if that would have made Velvet's death any less gruesome or painful. In previous years the players were given forests or beaches to fight to the death in, but not this year.
This year we were in the dark sewers of the capital, accessorized with ancient reptilian mutants from the old-age Amazon forests.
I shiver as I think back to when I was laying Wick to death, his last sight before he died would be the moldy cracked walls of the arena, filled with the stench of rats and sewer water.
Claudius Templesmith's voice causes me to look up at the ceiling which seems to be opening up above me, "Attention, attention. I announce this year's Victor for the 72nd Annual Hunger Games, Briar-Rose Flanagan!"
The grey hovercraft lowers from the sky, dropping a ladder in front of me. I look at Velvet's skeleton, not wanting to leave her. I hang on the bar for a few seconds more, silent tears streaming down my face. I didn't even know her but her death is the reason I lived.
The whirring of the hovercraft became louder as it tried to lower itself even more. My fingers were tired from hanging and my malnourished state was not making things better. I groan feeling the injury from the spear, flaring up from my stretched position on the bars.
With one last look at Velvet, I let one hand go of the bar and gripped onto the rung of the silver ladder. Before I could move my other hand to grip onto it better, my body froze. I couldn't move an inch until the ladder rose to the top of the hovercraft. Two Peace Keepers grabbed my arms and pulled me into the entrance. I tried to move out of their grip but, I felt a small prick on my arm and then everything went black.

A beeping noise wakes me up from my slumber, and I force myself to open my eyes. I look around and notice that I am hooked up to a heart monitor and an IV drip. I figure from the pristine white walls that I am in the Capitol hospital.
I immediately swing my legs out of the bed and notice that all the minor bruises and scratches I had received, were virtually nonexistent. Even the huge hole from the spear was now gone. There were just small lines, that used to be cuts and faint discolorations that used to be bruises. Both would no doubt be gone in a few days.
