Maxi’s POV~

As soon as I saw her face my mouth dropped open.

“Sav?” I half choked. She stared at me blankly.

“Yeah?” She sounded so chill.

“You have a kid?”

She chuckled a bit and then sorted herself out. Her arms were outstretched and the boy flopped against her. She stood up with him in her arms.

“No, it’s a friend’s kid.” She made quotation gestures on the word friend. I decided not to ask.

As soon as she said the kid wasn’t hers I felt slightly relieved but I wasn’t entirely sure why. I had no emotional attachment to her nor did I know her.

“Oh right. I was going to say, you’re only 18.” The moment those words spilled from my lips I knew I’d fucked that right up. I’d basically just told her that I knew things about her.

Sav’s features appeared to contort into a puzzled look. Amazingly, she shrugged it off.

“Yeah, well anyway haven’t you got a beach to patrol and a six pack to show?” she joked. Her beautifully white teeth beamed as her head tilted back in a laugh.

“Well in that case…” I slipped my lifeguard top over my head and threw it on the sand.

“Oh god!” she put her hand over her eyes and laughed again.

“Sav, I get off at 7:00. Meet me here ok?” I said suddenly. She looked up at me and nodded.

Sav’s POV~

After playing on the beach all morning, I took Vegas out for lunch and then to a park for an hour or so. Eventually he became insistent on going back to the beach.

“Silly dance man!” he pouted and stopped his little foot.

“But we can play on the swings!” I pointed over at the empty swing and smiled. Vegas shook his head.

Reluctantly, I took him back to the beach.

I set him down on the sand and let him play with around with another little boy.

Before too long, someone sat down next to me on the sand. I took a glance at them and realized it was a girl I hadn’t seen before.

She had light brown hair with almost blonde ends and blue eyes that were laced with black around the edges.

“That your kid?” she spoke after a minute or two. Her voice was soft yet playful and she was pretty.

“No, he’s a friend’s.”

She nodded in understanding. I couldn’t help but notice she was wearing a shirt not unsimilar to that of the lifeguards but it was white and blue. She was wearing booty shorts instead of boardies.

“He’s adorable. How old is he?” she smiled sweetly when Vegas waved over at us.

“Two.”

She looked surprised.

“Really? He looks so much older.” She mused.

“But he’s tiny?”

“Yes but his face.” She replied with a giggle. She looked at me for a moment and then stuck out her hand. I placed mine in hers and shook gently.

“I’m Natalie. And you are…” she began slowly.

“Sav.”

“Ahh ok, you’re Dunno’s sister?” she asked. I nodded and looked back at Vegas who was laughing hysterically.

“Cool, I’m Adriel’s girlfriend of four years.” She announced proudly. I smiled, whenever I’d seen him, he’d always spoken about her. “I’m also a surf instructor for kids.”

“Natalie!” Adriel yelled from the stairs of the tower. She turned her head and looked at him. “It’s 7:00, we’ve got to go!”

She turned to me again.

“Look, I’ve got to scoot now but it was nice meeting you. Here’s my number” she smiled and placed a pierce of folded paper into my palm before lifting herself off the sand and hopping off to her boyfriend.

I smiled them off and then looked back at Vegas… who had disappeared.

“OH FUCK!” I yelled and jumped up in a hurry. I looked around me and couldn’t see him anywhere.

Suddenly I felt a hand slide around my waist and a head lean in the crook of my neck.

“Looking for someone?” Maxi teased and I snapped around to find Vegas hugging him tightly.

“Vegas! Don’t ever run off!” I said sternly as he looked at me apologetic sucking on his dummy.

I couldn’t help but melt but I knew he needed to be told not to run off.

“It’s cool, he came saw me and came running over.” Maxi spoke calmingly and rubbed my arm reassuringly.

“But what if you weren’t there?” I snapped back. He took a step away and set Vegas down who promptly began rolling around.

Maxi turned back to me and pulled me into a hug.

“You’re new at this aren’t you?” he smiled. I nodded and sighed. I looked down at where Vegas had been only to find him gone again.

“Ve-“ I began but then he crawled in between my ankles.

Maxi and I both laughed.

“How am I going to last the whole weekend?” I moaned.

“I can help if you want? I’ve got tomorrow and Sunday off.”

I considered my options; stay alone with Vegas all weekend and face the fact that he might run off again or accept help from my new friend Trent ‘Maxi’ Maxwell.

“Would you? Thanks.” I smiled. He nodded reassuringly and bent down the pick Vegas up.
