'Deputy?! Deputy!' Jess's voice tuned into my ringing ears. I was acutely aware that she was now shaking my shoulders aggressively. Rubbing at my eyes, I looked up at the girl with the scarred face. It was definitely her.
'Where am I...?' Sitting upright, the sounds of the forest started to fill in as background noise.
'We're near the F.A.N.G centre. Jesus Dep, we thought you were fuckin' dead. You've been gone for damn near two weeks.' She hoisted me up and I struggled to comprehend what'd happened. 'Let's get you back to the den.'
Jess hoisted me into a car and drove us back to the base in silence. My mind ran wild with thoughts. Jacob had just ditched me in the forest. I could've been killed by wolves or a bear and he didn't even care. Embracing myself in a hug, I stared out of the window and watched the mountains whizz by in the distance. My fingers lingered on the bandage around my arm, remembering how it felt to have Jacob touch me. Granted he was far from tender but... No. I shouldn't be thinking like this. He was my enemy. If anything he'd just proven to me that that was the case. Jess pulled the car up outside the bunker and we jumped out. I stiffly climbed down the ladder, the archer close behind and made my way to the control room. The moment Eli lay eyes on me he strode over and pulled me into his arms. He smelt like autumn leaves and gunpowder. It was so damn familiar.
'You gave us a fright Rook.' His bushy beard scratched against my collarbone as he held me.
'Sorry. Got a bit caught up with your resident Seed.' I joked as he released me.
'Go freshen yourself up.' He moved away so that I could pass-by. I could feel his eyes lingering on me, particularly my arm where the bandage stood out like a sore thumb. I bit my lip as I rounded the corner, nervous that he might've picked up on something fishy. I just needed to play it cool and relax.

A few days later, I'd taken myself out to train in the woods. Eli wasn't happy about it but I knew I was off my game, especially since my arm had been torn apart. Punching the air and practicing my movements, I pushed my hair from my face. Aiming a well swung kick into the trunk of a tree, I watched a piece of the bark fly off and bounce across the ground.
'S'like the warehouse scene in Footloose down here.' I squeezed my eyes shut in annoyance and continued to practice, ignoring his voice.
'Didn't take you for a Kevin Bacon fan.' I eventually replied, landing another powerful kick on the tree.
'I'm not. Joseph used to make me watch it with him when we were kids.'
'Course he did.' I whirled round to land a punch in the air but it thudded heavily into Jacob's chest. He was much closer than I'd anticipated.
'Well at least ya kept your thumb out this time.' He chuckled, my fist still pressing against him. 'Y'know you ain't gonna get any better hitting a tonne of trees? They don't exactly fight back.'
'Cut the crap. What do you fucking want Jacob?' I hissed in annoyance.
'What're you throwing a tantrum about now?' He goaded me and I ended up kicking him in the knee. He barely moved at the impact, shifting his leg ever so slightly. 'Good try pup but it'll take more than that to floor me.' Without hesitation, I used all my might to shove him as hard as I could. In response, he lashed out to grab at me but I ducked under his arm. Whipping behind him, I tried to shove my leg between his thighs and trip him up but he locked his muscles and held me in place.
'Fuck!'
'C'mon Deputy, I thought you were better than this.' Jacob chided me.
'I am, I-'
'Really? Cause this is just sad. It's like kicking a puppy.' He joked, folding his arms defiantly and holding me in place. Grimacing, I bared my teeth before plunging them into his shoulder. 'Agh you little fucker!' He instinctively loosened the tension around his thighs and I was able catch his ankle. Stumbling over his boot, he switched around to try and grab me but instead fell backwards onto his spine. Legs still entwined with his own, I tumbled down on top of him.
'Oof!' Landing on his chest with a heavy thud, I shuffled upright by straddling his waist.
'Ugh fuck...' Jacob groaned, eyes squeezed shut and trying to nurse his back by propping himself up on an elbow. My hands gripped just beneath his ribs and I suddenly became very aware of my positioning. He seemed to realise the same time as me, flitting his blue eyes open to look at my thighs clasped around him. His gaze wandered up to focus on my mouth. Before I could stop him he closed the gap between us and pressed his lips to my own. Jacob's kiss was scratchy but warm, kind of reminiscent of his personality. His hands braced at the top of my thighs, thumbs tracing the top of my jeans.
'Jake...' I breathed into him and he suddenly whipped his head back. Shocked by his removal, I fell forward a little bit. Panic and worry danced across his expression, aware of the mistake he'd made. Shrugging me off of him with ease, he got to his feet and began to walk away hastily. 'Wait!' I stammered but he didn't. My legs staggered upright and I gave chase, trying to catch up with him. 'Jacob!' I panted as I reached him. His shoulders tensed at my voice.
'Leave me alone.' He grunted, continuing to trudge along at a rate that I couldn't keep up with.
'What did I do?' I stopped, arms swinging hopelessly by my sides. The soldier didn't answer me, simply melting into the forest and vanishing. Incisors pressing onto my lower lip, I pinched at the skin anxiously. Would this change the way he treated me?
