Jacob wasn't wrong when he said we could spend the entire day in bed together. He stuck to his word and we lounged around enjoying each other's company. However I was in for an even bigger surprise the next morning when I awoke to an empty bed.
'What time is it?' I grumbled, rubbing the sleep from my eyes and narrowing them suspiciously. My hair was a series of knots, tangled together from rolling around on top of the pillows. The door opened and Jacob strode, my clothes piled in his arms. He threw them at me and I keeled backwards, hitting my head hard on the headboard.
'Get dressed.' He instructed, folding his arms and leaning against his chest of drawers. Obeying, I threw my shirt over my head and awkwardly tugged my jeans on.
'What's going on?'
'Less questions, more dressing.' He snapped his fingers to hurry me along. Tugging my pilot jacket over my arms, I stood up and walked towards him. In one speedy motion, he grabbed my wrist and pulled it behind my back.
'Ow! What the hell!' I wriggled under his grasp but it was useless. Rope tightened against me, bonds forcing my hands together into an uncomfortable position.
'Let's go.' Jacob shoved me hard and I stumbled, landing on my knees and tearing my jeans. The denim split into white strands of fabric and I grimaced. Snatching the soft wooly collar of my jacket, Jacob hoisted me upright and pushed me out of the door. 'Stay on your fucking feet.' Frog-marching me out of the centre, I squinted in the harsh sunlight. Was he taking me back to the cage? Had I fallen straight into his trap again? God dammit I was dumb. Then I saw the red jeep parked at the end of the driveway. Cultists started to stare and I kept my head low, neck craning towards the dirty ground. 'Head upright.' Jacob pummelled the ball of his palm into my vertebrae, sending a jarring pain rippling up to my skull.
'Why are you doing this?' I hissed under my breath as he kicked me into the car door.
'Just get in.' He grumbled, opening it and pushing me inside. My cheek connected with the rough leather seats and I struggled upright, leaning into the chair. Jacob rounded the car and got behind the driver's seat.
'What the fuck was that?!' My voice was shrill as he started the engine, driving out of the courtyard and onto the road.
'Ya think it'll look good to my men if I walk out with you all fuckin' cozy? Use that brain of yours Deputy.' Piercing eyes focussed on the winding road ahead and I scowled at them, pissed off that we were back to square one after everything I'd done for him. 'Stop lookin' at me like that.' Jacob shifted gear and started to speed the jeep along faster. Clicking my tongue, I turned my attention to look out of the tinted window. As the trees whistled by, I bent my neck side to side in an attempt to ease the dull ache that had formed. The drive was silent but I did notice Jacob shifting awkwardly in his seat as though he was nervous about something. A large road block made out of white trucks and spikes stood in our way. Upon seeing Jacob's jeep however, they peeled away and let us past. He drove the car up a dirt track until we reached a dead end and he killed the engine.
'Well this isn't ominous at all.' I joked as the red-haired soldier got out and walked around to open the door for me. Birds chirped in the trees and butterflies floated by airily. Jacobs hands fiddled with my bonds until they were undone.
'C'mon.' He took my arm and marched me through the woods until we reached a large clearing. A rug and a bag sat in the middle of the grass. 'This is what you wanted right?' He gestured to the expanse of land and I cocked my head.
'Uhhhhh, sure?' I had no clue what the hell he was going on about. 'What, uh, what am I looking at exactly just to be certain?' I saw his face fall a little.
'You said you wished we could have a normal life together. So I made a picnic. That's what people do right?'
'Yes, yes I guess you're right.' I gave him a shy smile, unable to comprehend how thoughtful he was being.
'Look.' He took my arm again and pulled me over to the rug. He sat me down and started to rummage around in the bag, producing a plastic tub. 'This is for you.' He handed it to me and I stared through the translucent casing.
'What is it?' I asked, peering closely. It looked like meat. Was it meat? It didn't looked cooked if it was.
'It's bison. Freshly killed this morning.' He said proudly and I nodded along apprehensively.
'I see. And is it cooked at all?' I had to hide my grimace at the sight of the fresh blood that it was bathed in
'Course. Turned it over a fire a few times.' He nodded for me to dig in and I gave an awkward smile. 'You don't like it do you?' Again he looked crestfallen and I simpered. The things I did for this man.
'Are you kidding? I love it!' Opening the container, I picked up the bloody meat between two fingers and took an apprehensive bite. It was chewy and wet and cold and oh God it was so gross. It was absolutely terrible but I couldn't let my face give it away. Holding back a gag, I smiled at Jacob tightly as I swallowed. It slid down my throat like a hunk of goop and I shuddered.
'You're a fucking idiot.' He chuckled deeply and I frowned at him. 'I can't believe you ate that.' Reaching into the bag, he produced two fully cooked bison steaks complete with wild vegetables that were still roasting hot.
'Are you shitting me Seed?' I swatted at him but he dodged, still laughing.
'S'funny.' Catching his breath, he handed the cooked steak to me along with a fork. 'Go on pup, dig in.' Diving straight into my meal, I gobbled it up and flopped back onto the rug holding my now bloated stomach.
'Oh man, that was good.' I heaved a sigh, belly almost aching from how full I was. 'Thank you Jacob.' I smiled happily, closing my eyes and enjoying the feeling of the sun on my cheeks.
'Don't thank me. It's gonna make this much harder.' He coughed and my eyes opened as a dark shadow cast over my face. Jacob stood over my chest, a red pistol pointing at my shoulder.
'What are you doing?' I wanted to scramble away but I froze like a deer in headlights.
'You and I, we haven't completed our mission yet.' Finger dancing over the trigger, Jacob fought internally with his morals and his purpose. 'This is the final test pup. Prove me wrong. Show me that you're strong.' He loosed a bliss bullet and it buried under my collar bone, sending flecks of blood flying.
'I trusted you.' Gritting my teeth, I felt the drug begin to wash throughout my system. My vision went into a haze, head lolling around on the scratchy fabric of the rug.
'And that was your biggest mistake.' I heard him say though he didn't seem fully convinced by his words. Pupils dilating, the last thing I saw was Jacob bending down and scooping me up into his arms before the dosage knocked me clean out.
