The sound of screaming from the yard disturbed me and I rubbed at my eyes in exasperation. Luckily Jacob was still soundly resting beside me, catching up on some much needed sleep. Inching across the mattress, I slid out from under the duvet and padded across the wooden bedroom floor. Reaching out, I grabbed the window and pulled it shut so that Jacob wouldn't be disrupted.
'Don't go.' His voice was stifled and when I turned around I realised it was because his face was shoved directly into the pillow.
'I'm not.' I said with a smirk on my face, returning to his side as swiftly as I could. Upon covering myself up with the quilt, Jacob braced his arms around my stomach and pulled me to him. His giant build curled around me protectively and he rested his bearded chin on my shoulder. He swung a muscular hairy leg over my own and my ankles wound around his, resting the balls of my feet onto the bridge of his foot.
'Good.' Within seconds of speaking he'd eased himself back into a half-slumber.
'Do you feel better this morning?' I asked him, closing my own eyes so I could doze in a semi-comatose state.
'Hm.' I took his half-hearted throaty groan as a yes. Pushing myself closer to him, I felt the steady thud of his heart beneath his chest. Enjoying the feeling of having Jacob draped all over me, I let out a long wistful sigh.
'I wish we could stay here all day.'
'We can.' He mumbled into my neck, beard scratching at my skin as his jaw moved. It sent a tingling sensation through my body.
'Don't you have things to do?'
'They can wait.' One of his hands moved to my thigh and gave it a gentle squeeze, thumb rubbing back and forth. My heart swelled and I couldn't hide the stupid grin that spread across my face. He was prioritising me over everything else. 'Stop smilin' like that.' He ordered, voice laced with sleep.
'I'm not!' I lied, trying to straighten my mouth out.
'Don't lie to me. I can see your cheeks are raised.' He pinched my skin with his forefinger and thumb making me yelp.
'If you do that again I'll leave.' I warned, purposefully trying to shuffle away.
'I don't appreciate empty threats pup. Besides, no way you're gonna get outta my grip.' He tightened his hold around me, almost squashing my ribs with his bicep and I squeaked again. It made him chuckle deeply. 'So weak.' His thumb that rested on my thigh found its way beneath the fabric of my lace pants and I felt him tilt his head down to look. 'Shoulda worn the red pair.'
'It wasn't exactly a prime concern when I left last night.' I rolled over to face him, my nose brushing against his. I pressed a supple kiss to his mouth. 'Not a fan of white?'
'S'too fucking pure for a sinner like you.' He quipped, allowing me to brush his dishevelled hair from his brow.
'Pfft, 'sinner'. You don't honestly believe in all that religious bullshit do you?'
'Course I don't. I do know that the government has us fucked though.' He mulled over his words for a moment. 'And that this project gives me a purpose.' We fell silent for a moment.
'I wish this project had never happened.' I said quietly, fiddling with the chain around his neck. 'I wish we could have a normal life together.' Jacob seemed surprised at my words.
'Together huh? Pup, even if none of this existed your life would be far from normal if you were with me.' He gestured a hand at the scars littering his body. 'I'm no Henry.' I scrunched my nose up and punched him hard in the chest.
'There's a difference between living with your trauma and facing death on a daily basis.' I pointed out, sighing. 'I guess I'm just kinda tired of being on different sides all the time.'
'You could always join the project. I'd keep ya safe.'
'Or you could join the Resistance.' I tapped the end of his nose and he scowled at me. 'Yeah, didn't think so.' Slumping back, I draped an arm over my eyes. 'Why is my life so hard?'
'Oh woe is you.' Jacob mocked me. 'Quit ya whining or I'll-'
Knock knock.
We both froze, staring at the wooden door. Had we imagined it.
'Sir?' A calm voice came from outside. Without hesitating, Jacob shoved me under the covers by my shoulders and clamped a hand over my mouth.
'Enter.' He growled, voice dropping to its normal serious tone. I heard the door creak open but no footsteps.
'I apologise for waking you sir but-' They paused and my eyes grew wide. My clothes were littered all over the floor.
'You gonna fucking continue or are you just wastin' my time?' Jacob threatened, reaching to his bedside and producing what I could only assume was a weapon.
'Sorry sir, I didn't realise you had company! Joseph was calling over the phone for you-'
'Tell him I'm busy.'
'Yes sir of course. I'll make sure you aren't disturbed for the rest of the morning.' The cultist left, closing the door behind them. I popped out from under the sheets and let out a low whistle.
'That was a close call.' I turned to Jacob who held his red serrated knife in his hand. He put it down on the bedside table and I smirked. 'Sir huh?'
'Oh shut the fuck up.' He groaned, flopping back and pressing his palms to his face as I laughed manically until my cheeks were beet red and my lungs ached.
