Chapter 1

First day of school.

I curse as I wake up to a chilly room ventilated by an airconditioner high up top opposite my bed. Obviously I have once again failed to adjust the temperature stat on the blasted machine as I curl up under my sheets to shield off the arctic breeze that my air conditioner was emitting. Realizing the need to wake up for the first day of school, I mutter under my breath as I get up anyways and shut off the air conditioner.

Having won the elections for student body president on a landslide vote has lead me to the obligation of waking up earlier than usual to greet the flow of freshmen that shall now take their first step into university life at the Technological University of Greater Manila, one of the nation's elite universities.

Student Body President Kaiser Tuazon, not bad.

As I shake off the morning jitters of having just woke up, I turn to realize that I left my computer running overnight while having forgotten to shut it down. A ridiculous smile plasters my face as I know that right on that screen, hidden beneath the research and powerpoint presentation I've been working on all night for the university's freshman orientation, is yet another Victory screen that secures my spot as Top 1 on the Challenger Tier ranking in the League of Legends. Arguably one of the world's most played online games, it's an awfully strange past time for an elite student to have...though past time doesn't quite describe what the game means to me, it's practically my life.

Having had an extremely rough run in high school, I've vowed to set my life straight and start fresh as soon as I hit college. After barely making it into one of the nation's top universities with the abyssmal record I had in high school, I worked hard to make sure I had a strong start as early as my freshman year. Soon enough, I was noted for my impressive academic standing in the university as a consistent dean's lister and achiever. Along with that, my professors look at me with high regards and students, especially the girls, looked up to me as the epitomy of a perfect university student.

Though if there was one thing I discovered, if gaming was shed in a bad light during my high school years as a reason for underperforming students, at my university it was almost a taboo to everyone at our school. When your pitted against some, if not only, the brightest minds in the nation, you wouldn't be surprised to see people viewing gaming as a huge distraction from "what really matters" in life. From the on, worried that I'll be judged on my competitive background in gaming, I kept my academic and gaming career as two separate lives that I led.

It's a good thing there was nothing to remind me of my old ways in high school as I hail from a province far away from the concrete jungle known as Manila, hence it was easy as pie to keep my past and leave it as just that : the past.

The heavy string of lyrics of Imagine Dragon's "Warriors" suddenly interrupts my thoughts of the past as my phone reverbrates right next to my PC. I take a peek at who could possibly be calling me so early in the morning, let alone know I'm awake this early. I smile as it comes to no surprise that it turns out that my External Vice President, Jan Charles Zobel, or Char for short, was the one giving me the wake up call. I instantly pick up the phone to be greeted by Char's ridiculous enthusiasm.

"Yo bro! Ready for first day? Don't tell me you just woke up." Char asks. Jeez man, how could anyone be this energetic at 3:30am in the morning?

"Man, of course I'm ready. Your talking to TUGM's newly elected student body president here, not to mention top of the whole university in GPA dude." I reply in an as-a-matter-of-fact tone.

I hear Char laugh on the other line.

"Hey man, just checking. I mean, knowing you, you probably ended up playing all night on that game again."
