June

It was pride month. Syd and I had been excited for the past couple of weeks. I couldn't belive another year had gone by since I'd come out as (ys) to some of my friends. I hadn't told my parents, though. I knew she wouldn't approve.

"Ugh, look at all these gay people" my mom said, looking out the window at the neighbors house, which had a rainbow pride flag outside their porch.

"Mom, it's not as big of a deal as you're making it out to be. If it bothers you just ignore it. It's just for a month, then you can get back to being in your safe little haven of nearly everyone around you holding themselves back just to make you happy" I said sarcastically.

"Young (yg), go to your room! You do not talk to your mother that way!" She said.

I left the dining room and sighed. I didn't even get to finish my pancakes. It was a horrible way to start my sunday.

"What's wrong, (yn)?" Syd said and sat next to me on the floor leaning against the wall.

"My mom's a homophobe and I can't do anything for pride month cause I'm still closeted" I explained.

"I'm sure you can do something subtle" he said. "Maybe there's a small craft we can do for pride but when your parents come around just put it in your pocket" he said.

"Yah, maybe" I said.

I looked up crafts to do for pride month.

"Oh look! We can make mini pride flags out of clay and put them on a necklace!" I said.

"Sounds fun" Syd said.

We went to the store to get some clay and paint. I told mom it was for a school project.

"What to do we need?" He asked.

"The type that air dries so we don't have to put it in the oven, we can just make them in my room and my mom won't be like 'hmm what are these tiny rectangles for? *gasp* they could be FAG FLAGS!!!'" I said the last part in a mocking girl voice.

Syd cracked up. His laugh was like music to me. I couldn't help smiling like an idiot.

"What are you smiling about?" Syd said.

"Oh, nothing"

We got the paint and colors we needed and headed home.

We sat on the floor of my room and put a towel on my floor so we wouldn't get the floor covered in paint.

"Lets see... we need a cutting board and a rolling pin, paintbrushes, and a knife" I said.

"A knife?" Syd said. "Knives are dangerous, don't hurt yourself" he said worriedly.

"Don't worry we can just use a butter knife since the clay is pretty soft. We just need something to give it straight edges."

"Why not gay edges?" Syd joked. I laughed and shoved him a little. He shoved me back.

I took a clump of clay and flattened it on yhe cutting board with the rolling pin. Then I cut two rectangles out of it. One for me, one for syd. Then we poked a hole in them with a toothpick so we could put it on a necklace.

After it dried we got to painting.

"Mines gonna be the (ys) flag!" I said.

"Cool!" Said syd. "Mines gonna be the pan flag"

(Authors note: I know syd barrett most likely is not pan but I'm making him pan in this story so that it'll be able to fit anyone who reads it okay back to the story)

We painted our flags and put them on the windowsill outside my bay window so that they could dry without my parents seeing.

The next day they were dry and we put them on and wore them to school. Everyone thought they were pretty cool.
