TODAY'S THE DAY

Today is the day Kiri signed as he woke me up. Two months since the exams and it was finally time to move into U.A. We had already sent all my stuff to the dorms, and sent in my forms so now I would head to U.A. to live while I studied what it meant to be a hero.

Pulling myself from bed, I glanced to where Kiri had laid out my school uniform. I ushered him out so I could get ready, jumping in a quick shower. The hot water melted my anxiety before I stepped out of the water, wrapped in a towel. I tugged the green slacks on, the school accepting my non-binary status and not forcing me into a skirt. A T-shirt layered under the white button down and the red tie around my neck. Kiri popped his head in as I was pulling the blazer up my arms. He snapped a photo of me with his phone, the flash blinding me for a moment.

At least make it a good one I signed, smiling as he took a second photo.

I am going to miss you Akiara he signed, tears stinging his eyes.

You can call me at night red hair I sign back, crashing into him with a hug. He hugged me back, his breath tickling my neck as he pulled away. I grabbed my bag and slid into my grey converse.

Time to go I sighed as he picked up a box he must've sat on the table when he came in. He handed it to me with a small smile on his lips. It was small. Jewelry sized.

Just a small reminder of us he told me sheepishly, scratching his neck. I opened the lid to  reveal a small necklace with the letters AKB for the three of us. I gave him another hug, asking for help to put it on. The chilled metal lay against my skin as he clasped it. I touched the metal with a smile before checking my watch.

I really have to go I held my strap as I glanced around my very bare room before flipping the switch and shutting the door. Bakugo handed me a paper bag before I could leave and huffed before moving his hands.

Don't fail and eat your breakfast I crashed into him giving him a hug. I felt his arms stiffly return it. Those were the first words he'd ever signed to me and I would take them as a good luck even if that's not what he said.

Bye! Love you! I signed as I headed out the door, waving at the pair watching me head down the street. U.A. was a few blocks away, so it's not like I left the country. But from how distant Kiri suddenly felt I might as well have been.

Students were gathered outside of the dorms, a block from school. Classes wouldn't start until April though. Still three days away. Green hair caught my attention and I veered its direction. The two students with her stared at me as I approached them, tapping the green haired girl's shoulder. She jumped, her eyes wide as she started rambling things I couldn't hear. I pointed to my ear and she shut up, tapping her head as she tried to remember something.

K-O-M-A-K-O M-I-D-O-R-I-Y-A she spelt slowly, confusion on her face the entire time. I clapped for her when she was done. She'd done really well, and now I knew her name. I took her K and signed green hair, pointing to her hair.

"K, green hair" I heard her think before grinning, repeating the sign over and over. I chuckled, turning to see the teacher that had arrived. Deku, pro hero was a U.A. teacher?

Welcome 1-A class of U.A. There are 20 of you and this dorm gives you each your own rooms. Girls on the left and boys on the right. Take this time to unpack and get to know one another. Class starts in three days. Goat! he glanced at his hands and winced Plus Ultra he quickly signed, a blush on his face. No one else noticed his signing mistake, but he still signed an apology, meeting my eyes.

Thank you I signed back, glancing to Komako who was talking to a kid with feathers as hair. I had a lot of names to learn. All the students headed in the building, most racing to find the rooms. I sighed as I climbed the steps, knowing I had to be on the girls side.

Fourth floor, right beside Komoko and a red haired girl named Homura Todoroki from the sign beside her door. I headed into my room so I could unpack, running my fingers over the necklace Kiri had given me. I took in the bare room, boxes taking up the middle of the floor. I had an entire wall of the bookshelves to the left, my bed centered in the room. A desk sat in the middle of the left wall, nearly enclosed by the bookshelf. A closet sat off to the right, the second door in the room belonging to the bathroom. I went ahead and got my schoolbooks directly over my desk first, my journals the shelf above. I would have to get Kiri to send the rest of my books in the future. I noted a burn mark on one shelf, climbing on my desk to get a closer look.

BAKUSQUAD: KIRI; KAMI; MINA; BAKU  It looked almost melted into the wood, with scorch marks like someone had tried to burn it off.  Kiri's and Bakugo's names stood out to me. Whose room did this used to be? I pulled my cell phone out sending Kiri a text with a picture of the mark. I felt more at home knowing I was living in a room that my parents lived in, or ever just hang out in.

The lights flickered and I turned to see Komako standing awkwardly in my doorway. She tapped her head, her cheeks flushing as she did. I met her eyes and took a breath as her jumbled thoughts hit my own mind.

"What do I say? Hi! Um. I like your room. Ugh. She hasn't even decorated it yet. Do you want help unpacking? That was dumb. I'm sorry" I chuckled, turning my blue eyes to talk to her.

"Komoko, calm down. Your thoughts have to be controlled for me to understand. I know your anxiety is bad right now, but it's easier for both of us if you calm down while you don't know sign language and I would love help unpacking. Thank you." She flushed deeper, her mouth moving as she began muttering something.

I opened the closest box to me, pulling out a notebook I planned to use for school. Communicating with Komoko made more sense right now. I dug out a pen and wrote to the green haired girl.

-we can talk this way so I don't get a headache using my quirk, okay?-
I passed the note to Komako, giggling as the girls eyes widened and she started scribbling her response.
-Thank you! I would hate it if you were to pass out again! What do you want me to help with?-
Her handwriting was very soothing, neater than Bakugo's when I tried this with him. I smiled at Komoko sliding a box to her. She opened it and pulled out my coathangers and worked on hanging them in the closet. I dug into my T-shirts and jeans, giving them their own drawers in the built in dressers.

"Done!"  Komako screeched, entering my mind without the use of my quirk. I winced, glancing at my school uniform blazers and various other clothes she hung in my closet. I tilted the picture frame I'd been hanging so it was straight and took a look around my room. Me Kiri, and Bakugo hanging beside my mirror made it feel more like home. I felt myself frown as I touched my necklace.

"You okay?"  somehow it was really easy to hear the green haired girl and gave me no headaches. I faced her with blue eyes.

"I miss my parents. Kiri, especially, is always there for me and I really want to be home with him right now. But I'm excited to get to train to be a hero so I can take over when he is unable to keep up his hero duties. But thank you for helping with my room. It was faster and a lot friendlier." I ignored the twinge behind my eyes as I blinked back to red, putting an arm around Komoko.

"Can you show me some sign language? My dad has been practicing for months, but I never really learned." I nodded, chuckling as I started with some basics for her. Somehow, I suspected I had made a potential lifelong friend.
