Chapter-1

Every inch hurts…Like a thousand knives pricking my skin

“I’m gonna miss you so much…” I said, latching onto my best friend who I was leaving to London for.

Before I go on to my sappy story, I’m Savannah; Savanna Scott and I’m from India. I’ve had a very good life so far until my parents died in a car crash.

I’m 17 years old and I’m under the custody of my aunt; mother’s sister, who’s happily married and settled in Bradford, UK.

I’m not sure they’re too fond of me to be frank, but there’s no other go, or I’ll be out in the streets.

And back to present, I’m currently in the arms of my best friend, Varun. I’m crying my heart out on my friend’s shirt. It’s gonna be the first time we’re gonna be separated by such massive distance since birth.

“Don’t worry….We’ll chat and video call every single day…It’d be like you never left…” Varun whispered in my ear slowly.

“But…it’s a new school….new environment..I hardly fit in here; how’d you expect me to settle in a new country…and that too with them?” He understood perfectly from my tone that I was talking about my aunt and uncle.

He rubbed my back and said, “It’s gonn-“

“It’s time for our flight, beta….” My aunt cut him off and informed us. I broke apart from my hug with Varun and stared at his face; the face I’m only going to see through a screen from now on.

I took in his curly mop of hair and his blue-green eyes, which was rare for an Indian. His boyish face and cheeky smile was something I’m definitely gonna miss. He wiped the mess of tears from my face and attempted to pull my cheeks to a smile.

“Smile now…Don’t you dare leave me with a frown on your face…” He said in his deep, husky voice and looked straight into my eyes.

I tried my nearest attempt to a smile and I saw his eyes well up and he started walking backwards. “I’ll miss you….” He mouthed.

My aunt pulled me away from there and into the security checking. All the while, my legs failed to move away from my homeland, but I had to…

I stood limp as the lady ran a metal detector over me and patted for any weapons. And before my conscious mind could register, we were on the plane to Bradford.

The next time I would step on land would be the foreign soil at the Leeds International Airport…and I wasn’t looking forward to it.

I sat in our economy class seat near my aunt, while she read some magazine loaded with gossips and the latest trends in fashion. She seemed to be a lady who followed all of that, you could guess with the way she carried herself. My family- me, my mom and dad- followed a rather simple and grounded life.

I heard a voice ask in thick British accent, “Would you like anything to drink, ma’am?” I looked up and saw a really fair lady.

Before I could open my mouth, my aunt replied, “A tequila would be nice….” She pursed her lips and looked at me for a second and back at the stewardess and continued, “and perhaps a coke for the girl”

The air hostess smiled and left.

And I didn’t like the way my aunt referred to me as ‘the girl

A buzzing was heard around the flight and the stewardess’s voice could be mechanically heard to us.

“Good morning everyone, welcome to British Airlines. We are currently at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi; local time 3 hours and 10 minutes. We will reach our destination, Leeds Bradford Airport at 13 hours and 2o minutes local time, and the duration of the journey is 14 hours and 10 minutes. Our main flight attendant would demonstrate the safety procedures and precautions to be taken. We request your sincere cooperation to make your journey enjoyable. Thank you”

I listened to it with wide eyes. This was my first flight and I have to admit, I was nervous. I held on to my silver bracelet that my parents had gifted me on my 16th birthday and prayed for a safe flight to Leeds.

To say that 14 hours and 10 minutes passed quickly would be a complete lie! It was horrible…I felt so isolated. My aunt didn’t even talk to me the entire journey; she just gobbled up the juicy gossip in her magazine

After a decent meal that barely filled my stomach and a few bathroom breaks, we reached Bradford.

We descended the stairs and went to baggage claim. I had small suitcase worth of my belongings and a few pictures and books. I pulled that with difficulty from the conveyor belt as I wasn’t the fittest for my age.

I was 5’4” and extremely thin, with tan, but fair complexion. My hair was in brown waves naturally with the color matching my eyes.

My aunt picked two of hers; despite her being in India only for a week to pick me up. We strolled out suitcases to the entrance where my aunt was talking in a rushed tone in her phone. A shiny black car pulled up and a man of late forties stepped out of the driver’s seat and sent me a warm smile.

I felt my lips tug upward and returned the gesture. He came forward and hugged me and asked, “Had a nice flight?”

I smiled faintly and nodded. He loaded our luggage into the trunk of the car. My aunt walked in her pointed heels to the passenger seat and I trailed behind slowly and sat in the back.

I played with my fingers while my aunty and uncle talked in hushed voices. I could hear my name being pulled up every while and I hummed and acknowledged my presence when required.

At last, the car came to a stop after half an hour and I opened the door. The trunk was opened so I proceeded to pick up my suitcase from it.

My uncle twisted the key into the hole and opened the door. I came face to face with a sophisticated house…not a home. Everything was just pleasing to the eyes; not the heart. It lacked that homey feel.

“I’ll show you your room, beta” My uncle said and I followed him up the white marble staircase. He opened the first door and I was amazed at the large size of my bedroom. It could at least hold four people lavishly.

“Thank you, uncle. It means a lot, what you guys are doing to me…” I said and passed him a grateful smile. He just smiled and mumbled, “Just get some rest, love…Come down when you’re ready…” and closed the door.

This is gonna be a tough life!
