Chapter 3

Katniss's POV

"You have to tell at least one secret, it's practically a law." Finch says.

"Like what? I have boring stories that couldn't even be considered secrets." I tell them, there's really no secrets I possess, they're all ones I'd never tell anyone, no matter who they are.

"Oh come on, we've all done it." Annie says.

"Well what are your secrets then?" I ask.

"Mine is going to school everyday in a Captain America costume. When I was in fifth grade," Thresh says, making me smile slightly at the image of Thresh running around in a Captain America costume.

"Mine is bubble-wrapping principal Snow's office last year," Finch says.

Nice.

"Peeing in the pool, during an important race." Finnick says.

"And every race after that," Annie adds. He just smiles at her. "Stealing Finnick's school journal in sixth grade, before we were dating."

"That's cute," I say.

"Getting a tattoo," Is what Johanna says.

"Where?" I ask.

"My neck," she says.

"Can I see?" I ask.

She lifts up her hair, revealing the name of a girl Joselyn.

"Whose Joseyln?" I ask.

"My sister, died in a car crash."

"I'm... I'm sorry."

"Don't do that, if you've lost someone before you probably know that the pity is annoying."

I nod, "My dad, lost him when I was twelve." I clear my throat.

"How?" She asks.

"Military, he was shot," I say.

"Shouldn't that count as her secret?" Johanna asks.

"Well, maybe not something depressing." Finnick suggests.

"Sorry, that's all I got."

"First crush," Annie suggests.

"Um, a guy named Sam, in kindergarten." I make something up.

No way I'm telling them about Peeta.

"Where's he now?" Frankie asks.

"Moved away," I shrug.

"How come you don't smile a lot?" Annie asks.

"Smiles are just tougher to get out of me." I say truthfully.

"Hm," She wrinkles her eyebrows. "Thresh, I think you need to turn on the tickling machine."

"No!" I say, he grins and comes closer. "No, no, no!"

Before I can finish objecting he's tickling me, and I can't help but start laughing, and then smiling.

"You should smile more, you have a real nice one." Johanna says, with a small smile.

"You smile less than Johanna, which no one knew was possible." Finnick jokes.

"Smiles are earned," She says. "You shouldn't have to fake them."

That's one of my life mottos.

"We don't we're just happy." Finnick says.

"You can be happy and not smile a lot," I say.
