Handsome, I thought. I'll give him that. Although he does look odd with all that eyeliner on.
I laid eyes on my soulmate for the first time. His chest rose and fell quickly with each panting breath he took. I watched the drop of sweat fall from his chin to his knee, bent from his pose. His black hair and pale skin made me think he was some kind of vampire at first. However, knowing that his tattoo matched mine made my heart pitter patter a little faster in my chest.
"Well? What do you think? Isn't he so cute?"
Cute? I didn't think so. Honestly, he wasn't really my type.
"Rose, put that away! Everyone's looking," I told her. I waved my hand dismissively at her phone, trying to make her put it away before someone saw my supposed soulmate on her screen.
"Wha—? Who cares?! He's your soulmate!"
I clapped my hand over her mouth, silencing her. "Shut your mouth! Don't talk about that stuff here!"
"Why not? It's just school. Everybody's always flashing their tattoos to each other."
Rose gestured around the hallway where students actively showed off their unique tattoos in hopes of finding their soulmate at a young age.
"Well I don't want everyone to know what my tattoo is," I said, crossing my arms stubbornly.
"Why? None of them are your soulmate anyway. You shouldn't be so secretive about this stuff. You're the same way with your per—"
I slammed my hand over her mouth again, effectively shutting her up. She was right. I hated talking about it all: tattoos, bras, boobs, periods, bodies in general. My father had always taught me that my body was mine, sacred. They weren't supposed the be thrown around in every conversation the way my friend liked to do.
Rose jerked my hand away from her mouth. "Alright, I got it. I'm sorry."
She reached down to her pocket and pulled out her iPhone 5 again, looking up the photo of the man's tattoo.
It was on his shoulder, just like mine, splaying out onto his collarbone like a spilled jar of pepper. The dots would've just looked like a series of freckles or moles to anyone else, but I knew what they were: the dots marking the stars in the constellation Orion. I knew what they were. I had the same dots.
My hand instinctively went to rest on my shoulder, feeling the dots burn gently on my skin. Rose was right again. He was my soulmate.
Kim Seokjin, recently debuted Korean singer and dancer. My soulmate.
And he would never know it.
