Chapter 5: Wow, You're Acting Crazy
After introductions, they split us up into groups of two, so that we could warm up our groundstrokes. I was put with Maria, since she was the only other girl. Her groundstrokes weren't that great, but I guess they were alright. The four boys from earlier were split into tall on tall and short on short. Since there was an odd number, Matt had to warm up with Gordy.
Suddenly, in comes a boy that had a brown bowl haircut and had light brown eyes. He said sorry for being late, and he said his name was Ethan. He ended up warming up with Matt, since he was only one left. I watched him play a little bit, and he didn't really know how to use correct form at all.
Matt was hitting with basically perfect form, but he didn't get much speed on the ball. Although, he did have a tendency to fall over a lot.
Zack AKA Creepy Guy, was perfect at hitting the ball with speed, and had perfect form, but he really scared me. I really didn't understand why, it might be how his stares make him look like he is studying everyone's mistakes to find their weaknesses. I shivered thinking about it.
Zack was hitting with Dylan, or Disney Character Voice Guy if you prefer to call him that. Dylan was also practically perfect at hitting the ball. He tended to hit a lot of slice shots, though.
Typical SnapBack Dude AKA Ty looked as though he was the oldest kid there, yet he didn't have everything 100% perfect. Sometimes when trying to back up, he would stumble a bit. His form was almost perfect, but you can always improve, I guess.
That One Tall Guy AKA Lester was hitting with SnapBackMan AKA Ty and he was hitting well. He pretty much only had the same problem as SnapBackMan AKA Ty.
Somehow, while analyzing everyone else, I was still able to hit everything back perfectly. Funnily enough, I saw that the other kids looked kind of impressed on how good I was hitting.
Now I'm proud of myself for sure, I guess.
The instructors put us into groups of two or three and put the three groups on different courts.
Guess who was in my group? Just guess.
Dylan.
And.
Matt.
Since there were three groups of people, they brought in another instructor, so they could have one group to each instructor. The new instructors name was Lauren. She was probably between 18 and 23. She had long dirty blonde hair that was in a high ponytail. Her deep green eyes matched the color of the tennis court in front of me.
It turns out that they were having Scott be our instructor for awhile, then they'd switch us to Lauren, then to Gordy. We were going to do different things at each station. At Scott's station, we were going to work on serves. At Lauren's we were going to work on footwork. Lastly, at Gordy's station we were going to play King Of The a Court which is basically a way of playing out points in a fun way, and the King or Queen at the end wins.
Our group was told to start out at Scott's station. He told me to do some regular serves to start out, and he told me that he was going to change up my grip and teach me a new way to serve.
I was thrilled, of course. Well, at least up until he told me it would be extremely difficult to get it to work at first. During the amount of time at that station, all of us were a part of some pretty, um...well, uh...interesting conversations.
One of them went a little like this:
"Faith, you're doing really well so far,"Scott said encouragingly.
"Hey Scott, what about me?" Dylan asked, then hit a perfect serve.
"You're doing great, Dylan! Matt the man on the other hand is just doing terrible and I don't know how he lives with himself. I mean oh my god," Scott replied happily at first, but then became sarcastic.
My laughter started.
"Well at least I don't look all crazy excited every time I get a serve in," Matt smirked, flicking his eyes in my direction.
My laughter stopped.
"Seriously?" I said, arching my eyebrows up.
"Yeppo,"
"At least I don't fall over every other second. I don't know you could even stand on a sticky floor, while wearing suction cups on your feet, without slipping and dying," I muttered at him.
I heard Scott and Dylan try and hold in laughter, yet Dylan failed, and burst out laughing.
We all joined in, but somehow stayed on task, and kept doing serves. Throughout the rest of the serve section of today, we had many more similar conversations, that all ended in lots of laughter.
Once time was up for the first station, we headed over to Lauren's station. At her station, we were moving the whole time. We were running through cones, then ladders, and then hitting a ball. There was no time to talk. It was pretty boring, but I worked up a sweat, so I guess that is a good thing.
Next was Gordy's station, playing out points.
Crap.
You see, the people I'm currently up against are extremely good players.
"Ok, who wants to be champ first?" Gordy asked us.
Dylan and Matt both blurted out 'me' at the same time, while I backed off. Gordy told them to do rock, paper, scissors to figure out who'd be the King of the court first.
Not gonna lie, it was almost as intense as camping is intents.
{A/N: hehehehe}
The conclusion was, Matt would be champ first. I challenged first. I had to hit a forehand, and play it out. If I won the point, I would become champ.
Since we had just done footwork, I was pumped to play some points. I hit a perfect forehand at him, but he sent it back using a backhand.
I focused and used a ton of control in my shot a hit a blazing forehand right back to him, but he returned it again. My mind was racing with different strategies. I decided to make him run. I hit it to left, then to the right, and so on until he gave up.
After he missed the last one, I became the champ of the court. I ran over to the other side. I felt cool and collected...until I realized Dylan was the person going up against me. Then, I was terrified.
He hit an amazingly, magnificent, and perfect forehand to me. It was so good, that it went right past me.
Whoops.
The rest of the station was Matt and I trying to beat him, but we failed....alot. Although, we had some laughs, because of how terrible we were doing.
Finally, the class was over and in all honesty, I was disappointed that it ended so quickly. I grabbed all my stuff, and walked up the stairs into the room from earlier.
As I was about to go down the stairs, I couldn't believe who stopped me.
