A/N: Long chapter to make up for my long absence! Yay!!

Chapter 20: besties...

As I was thinking those extremely odd thoughts, I was greeted by a familiar pair of brown eyes across the room. He smiled and I returned it.

"Be right back, I have to say hi to someone real quick." I said to Riley while standing up.

"Can I meet this someone?"

"Uh, just guard the food for now..."

"Fine, but you have to tell me about the hot guys afterwards," she winked.

I laughed and made my way across the restaurant. He got up and met me in the middle of it.

"Hey," he smiled. "It's cool seeing you somewhere other than tennis for once."

"Yeah, you too," I smiled back at Dylan.

"By the way...I never properly thanked you for helping Matt back there, so...thanks."

"Nothing less for the besties!" I laughed, yet he had a split second of disappointment on his face. Speaking of Matt, things were still kind of iffy from the football game, but as I looked over at Dylan's table, an idea popped into my head.

"Hey, do you think my friend and I could sit by you guys?" I asked him.

"Of course. I mean, nothing less for the bestie, am I right?" he laughed. I just rolled my eyes, which caused us both to burst out laughing.

He went back to his table and sat down, and I walked over to mine to ask Riley if she would be willing to sit with them.

"Hey hey hey, you have to tell me about the hot guys from tennis first," she smirked.

"Would you be willing if I told you that they are the hot guys from tennis?" I teased.

"Wait they are?!" she exclaimed standing up quickly.

"Yes, I'm serious. Come on, let's go by them!"

"Just let me fix my hair first." Wow, even when she has no idea what she's getting into, she still wants them to be attracted to her.

We walked towards their table, and once she got a look at them she quietly squealed.

"You are such a girl," I muttered in her direction.

Matt smiled at me as we sat down and said a simple, "hey."

I willed myself not to get lost in his eyes as I had once almost done at a tennis lesson.

"Dylan, Matt, meet Riley. Riley, meet Dylan and Matt," I said motioning to each as I said their names.

In the booth we sat in, Matt and Dylan sat on one side, and Riley and I sat on the other side. I was across from Dylan, and Riley was obviously across from Matt in this set up.

"So, is this your total bestie?" Matt joked, raising an eyebrow, completely ignoring the fact that the football game even happened a few weeks ago.

"Yeah totally!" I laughed, playing along.

"Waaait just a second! I thought we were your besties," Dylan objected.

"Can't we just accept the fact that I have zillions of besties who are totes better than you guys?" I said, jokingly, in a dumb teenage girl voice.

"No, we will never accept that, because nobody is better than us," Riley said, mimicking my voice.

"Now that, my friends, is the total truth," Matt intercepted.

The majority of our night there went just like that, but halfway through Matt said that he wanted to talk to me about something in private. Riley and Dylan said it would be ok if we just left em' there for a bit, so we went to the other side of Culvers. We sat down in a two person booth, and he exhaled heavily, as if about to say a whole lot.

"Ok, so I know I didn't warn you about this conversation like I did the last one, but I'm just going to lay this on you," I looked at him, as if scared of what he was about to say. "My dad knows that I was put into adoption a few months ago, and that I was adopted by Dylan's family. He won't stop at any means to get me back, but I'm planning on reporting him to the police for child abuse and murder and stuff, so he won't get me back."

"Wait, wait, wait, you didn't report him yet?!" I asked him with wide eyes. "He could've found you and killed you already!! Your new mom didn't report him either, did she?"

His voice was now an ashamed whisper, "No, she didn't. I didn't want her to, so I said I already reported him..."

"WHAT?! Ok, I'm sure you have a great reason...but why?!"

"I felt too guil-"

"He killed your mom and you were guilty?!?!!!" I interrupted. "Honestly, we are going to the police station now. We have to do this as soon as possible."

"Ok," he said inaudibly. "But how will we explain what we are doing to Riley?"

"She's my best friend, I don't think she'd ever tell."

"I don't want to tell another person."
