Thomas –

You open your eyes to find yourself in an iron cage that is going up fast. You bang on the sides and scream for help, only to hear no responses. You try again, but the cage suddenly stops and you hit your head into the unforgivable metal wall. You fall and your vision slips into darkness.

You open your eyes wide and take quick breaths as you come back into consciousness. You see a pair of brown eyes staring straight at you. You quickly scramble away from the eyes, and shield your eyes from the sudden light of the sun. “Hi there, Greenie,” says the boy with the brown eyes and an uncontrollable head of unwashed blond hair. “The name’s Newt,” he says, offering his hand to help you up. You hesitantly look from the hand to the boy. “Don’t worry, no one’s going to hurt you.” You take the hand and Newt helps you pull yourself up. A rope falls down the side and you quickly climb it. You jump onto the grass but lose your balance, falling to the ground and taking someone down with you. You have landed on top of the person and now you were staring at a pair of deep brown-green eyes that you could just melt into. A feeling of excitement stirs in you and you smile sheepishly at the boy. “I am really, sorry,” you quickly say, getting off him and brushing yourself off. “No, no don’t worry about it,” the boy says, giving you a quick smile. “I’m Thomas,” he says, wiping the sweat off his forehead. “I can’t remember my name,” you say, thinking hard and carefully, searching for clues on what your name was. “Don’t worry,” Thomas said, “You’ll remember it in a few-” “Y/N,” you say. “My name is Y/N.” “Well then nice to meet you Y/N,” Thomas says, extending his hand. You shake it. “The pleasure is mine,” you say holding his gaze for about three seconds before looking away. You turn to see all the other people had already walked away, and the fact hit you that you were the only girl in this place. You turn to Newt. “Where am I?” “Welcome to the Glade,” Newt replies, gesturing his hand as if to show off something valuable. You raise an eyebrow. A dark-skinned boy comes over to you and says, “My name is Alby.” “Hi,” you say casually. “First off, I’ll be giving you a tour of the Glade,” Alby says, walking off. You realise you have to walk with him and quickly run off after him. “So, where am I? What am I doing here? Why am I here? How long will I be here for? And who are all of you?” Alby raises a hand in my face. “No questions today, Greenbean.” “My name is Y/N,” you say, starting to get annoyed. “Whatever. So anyway……” You look around this place called, ‘The Glade’ and watch what everyone was doing. You spin in a circle until you see the brown-green eyes staring straight at you. You smile at Thomas and he smiles back before a muscular Asian boy pulls him by the shirt to a building. You sigh dreamily.

Newt –

You realise that you are in a cage, no an iron box surrounded by containers labelled WICKED. You pull all the hair from your face and realise the box is acting like an elevator, going up and just keeps on going up. You repetitively punch a wall and yell for help – no answer. The box has stopped moving. You feel relieved and two door-like cemented slabs open, revealing the light of a thousand suns. All you can see are figures of people surrounding the box as if you were an attraction at a zoo. One figure jumps into the iron cage/box. When your vision comes back into focus, you can see a pair of brown eyes that sent you into a hypnotic state. “Hiya, Greenie,” the boy says, straightening his arm and extending his hand. You keep gazing at the boy and finally take his hand. As soon as you came into contact with his hand, the feeling sent electric shocks up your spine, and you quickly take your hand away and shuffle back. “Don’t worry, I won’t bite,” the boy says kindly, but in a way that made you feel you could trust him, that you could tell him anything. You take his hand and he pulls you up. “The name’s Newt, Greenie, and I’m second in charge here.” “Greenie?” you ask. “It’s what we call the newest person to the Glade,” Newt says in his strong British accent. “Unless you remember your name.” “I’m Y/N,” you say searching his eyes, and him searching yours. “Well, pleasure to meet you, Y/N. Now you’re first going to take a tour with the leader, Alby.” He comes close to me and whispers to me, “Any questions, ask me. Alby is a little impatient at times.” “Okay,” you say, flashing him a smile and climbing out of the box. With a little effort, you are out and surrounded by boys. “Whoa,” says an Asian boy that looks around the same age as you. “What?” you ask a little aggressively. “Out of all the boys I have seen out of that box, no one has ever gotten out of it without some help,” he says. “Oh, that was easy,” you say, dusting off your hands. “So, where all the other girls?” you ask. “You’re the first one,” says a voice behind you. You turn around to see Newt standing there. You give a small chuckle. “You’re joking, right?” Newt shakes his head, and you are in a state of shock. Newt comes up and puts a hand on your shoulder. “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. I can sense you are a strong one.” You take a deep breath and sigh. “So what am I supposed to do here all day?” you ask. “I think Alby can take it from here,” Newt replies, and all the other boys were walking off and continuing with whatever they were doing. A darker-skinned boy comes over to me. “Hi Greenie,” he says, as if it was saying the most natural thing in the world. “I’ll give you a tour, and then you can have some lunch.” He starts walking and talking with you beside him, wishing you had more of an opportunity to talk to Newt.

Minho –

You have been in the Glade for nearly two weeks and you have tried every job in there, and tomorrow you start the final job: being a Runner. “You will be running with Minho tomorrow. Make sure to stick with him and DO NOT leave his side. Hear me?” Alby says sternly at dinner one night. You give a mock salute. “Aye, aye Captain.” “Don’t give me any sass,” Alby points a finger at you. “That’s what Minho’s here for.” The strong Asian boy chuckles. “Don’t worry, Greenie. I’ll make sure to go easy on you tomorrow. REALLY easy. Alby, why are you letting a girl try out to be a runner anyway? She’ll die from exhaustion.” You clench your fists and your knuckles are turning white. “Oh really?” You stand up defiantly. “Bring it.” You storm off but also a little hurt. You always thought Minho was cute but that just hurt. Oh, how you will show him.

The next morning you wait outside the Maze, waiting for the doors to open. “Oh, you showed up Greenie,” you recognise Minho’s voice and turn around. “Yeah, I did. Why so surprised?” Minho raises both hands to his face. “No, I’m not. I expect when someone makes a decision, they commit to it. Most people would have chickened out.” You raise an eyebrow. “Okay then.” Just as you said that, there was a loud rumbling noise and the Maze came to life, the doors opening. Minho runs in and you follow. For the next two hours you were right by his side, helping him slash the ivy across the walls. Another hour later, he signals you to stop. “We can eat lunch,” he says taking his pack off, and you do the same before resting against the wall. As you take a large gulp of water, Minho says, “You continue to surprise me, Greenie.” “Um, good,” you reply. “I’m sorry about last night. I was too quick to judge and now I’ve learnt my lesson.” This took you back. “It’s fine. But why the sudden apologising? Did someone threaten to slit your throat or something?” “No, I don’t plan on making anyone, especially you, upset,” Minho responds. “Okay.” There was a slight pause. “You are a real softie. I hope you know that, right?” Minho playfully punches you, sending prickles up your arm and up your spine. “Am not!” he retaliates. “Are too.” You giggle and finish drinking. “Ready to go?” Minho gets up. “Let’s go.” You both take off running and he says to you, “Tomorrow, I’m going to assign you to a section and you have to take down notes and memorise the paths and turns. Think you can do it?” You have reached the Glade and you sprint, leaving him behind. “Oh, will I be ready.”
