Grrrrrr. Sometimes I hate it when Gally tries to take control of me. Just again this morning, he instructs me to not go in the Maze even though I’m a Runner. I didn’t listen so I run anyway.

There’s this new guy, Thomas, and I think he’s pretty nice. Gally thinks otherwise. Whenever I so much as look a Thomas, he comes up and just kisses me roughly.

Meanwhile, I run and slash the ivy, careful not to slice it so that it fell on me and continue to map out this section. It has been a very productive day, taking all my anger out on my work. I look up and see that the sun is dipping below the horizon. Oh no. Not good. I hear a loud sound, ringing with finality. I groan as I lean against the wall, the concrete cold against my back.

Gally’s POV:

I stand at the Doors. Where is Hali? Shuck. I tell her not to go in there, and of course she grows stubborn and goes in there! Newt comes up to me and puts a hand on my shoulder. “She’ll be fine. She’s strong, she’ll come back,” he says. I shrug off the comforting hand and turn to face him. “I swear, if she isn’t back, I will throw someone in there to look for her.” Newt glances at his leg and says, “Well then, throw yourself in there if you love her that much.” And with that, he walks off. I sigh and put my face in my hands. The problem is, I do love her that much. So much that I will go in there. I know she has to come back. She has to. I walk away and decide to eat some dinner before going back out to stand there.

I reach the Homestead when I hear a low rumble. I look up and see the Maze Doors closing in. I drop my spoon and run to the Doors as fast I can, trying to squeeze through the gap to look for Hali. But it was no use. Before I even got to the Doors, they are closed. I scream for Hali’s name one last time.

Hali’s POV:

I have been sitting in the same position for at least probably a good half hour. My breath is beginning to condense and that’s when I decide to look for a hiding place. Unfortunately, I look around and realise that I am sitting right next to the Griever’s nest. And guess what is prowling in there? Grievers.

I run as fast I my legs can carry me, my eyes beginning to water. The Doors have to be open by now. The Griever rounds the corner and gallops after me. I turn one last corner and see the Glade, a tiny little dot. I can hear the Griever slowing down, because it is sunny in the Glade. I continue to sprint and I reach the Glade, my chest heaving in and out. The first person to come to me is Gally. “Hali, are you okay? What happened? Are you stung?” I shake my head and begin to shiver violently. I think I might have caught something. It was very cold in the Maze. Gally gives me his outer layer of shirt and wraps it around me, before hugging me and stroking my forehead. “You’ll be okay. Everything’s going to be okay.” This is the last phrase I hear as my eyes droop the world now seeming like a whole other world away.
