I pin a piece of hair behind my ear, washing off a crumby table. I take my cloth, putting it in my apron when I hear the door. I looked up and watched an old man walk in, a paper folded under his arm and a winters jacket bundled around him. He sat down at a table by the window but didn't settle in or remove his jacket. He looked frozen and that made me a little bit depressed.
"Scarlett," my attention was caught by Tess, holding a tray in her hands. "you're good to go. I got this guy,"
"You're sure?" I ask her, and she nods smiling before following in the man's footsteps to his table by the window. I took a deep breath before heading back into the breakroom, taking my bag off a hook and draping my coat over my shoulders.
"You in tomorrow?" I hear a voice and turn to see Mary Jay leaning against the wall, staring at me. I nodded.
"No," I respond and trying walking by her when she catches my shoulder.
"Where do you think you're going? My car is this way," she tells me and I sigh, backing up so that I can have a regular conversation with her.
"I appreciate all that you're doing for me, but I can handle myself."
"You obviously can't because you showed up at my house in a mess of blood, sweat and tears." she recollects and I cringe, taking a breath.
"I told you, it was a hunting trip gone wrong." I tell her which wasn't quite a lie, but it was nowhere near the truth either. She rubs the space between her upper lip and nose, staring at the ground beside me.
"I'm givin' you a place and tryin my hardest to look out for you Scarlett, but you gotta meet me half way," Mary Jay said to me and she was right. I shut myself off from her and everyone around me. After that night, I haven't been the same and I'm not sure I ever will be. I swallowed my thoughts, forcing them back into the drak corner they crawled out of and put a hand on her shoulder.
"I'll see you toinght," I whispered and walked past her and out of the break room. I walked to the cash register, clocked out and then left. Whilst running out into busy streets and cold weather, I pulled my jacket around me a little tighter.
"Hey Scarlett," I turned and saw a friendly face, smiling down at me.
"Max, hi," I said, and began to walk in the opposite direction. Crap. He's going to start flirting with me. He walked up next to me and matching my pace.
"Would you be interested in going for a coffee run with me?" he wonders and I stop walking, smile politely and shaking my head.
"I actually have to run some errands." I tell him and he nods in understanding.
"Maybe another time?"
"Another time." I assure him when I really had no intention of ever going to coffee with this 40 year old virgin. "Nice seeing you."
"You too."
I checked my watch, 5:00pm. Across the street sat an old bookstore, right next to a coffee shop. I looked both ways before running across to the bookstore and walking inside, the bell ringing and announcing my arrival.
"Hello m'am," the owner smiled. "can I help you find anything?"
"No I'm fine, thank you."I responded and started my walk around. I was subconciously drawn to the section on Demons and had to turn around and walk towards something to take my mind off it. Romance.
I hate romance novels, I really do, but it didn't have me thinking about that night so I was safe...until I thought about Sam. That just made me sick. I went to the Action/Adventure section next, and then to the horror stories and cringed at everything. It was all too real. Finally, I decided on This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I smiled. The Great Gatsby was one of my faveorites, I'm sure this wouldn't let me down...or let me make connections of my own.
