Chapter 8: Everest’s POV
School. I hated it so much and I had no idea if Kaitlyn and Julia were going to be there. Unfortunately, our male friends already finished school a year before us and they gloried the fact that they could rub it in our faces.
There such assholes. But there my assholes.
I was sitting next to May in the car who was talking about whatever school event that was going on in her school. Thankfully I’m in high school and I don’t need to hear about the lame Middle School dance and what boy she’s dating at the moment.
I wasn’t even listening to her. I had my ear buds shoved in and I was text Andy. Of course we were making fun of her conversation even though neither of us knew what she was really talking about. I just suspected that she has had 8 boyfriends and they all were at the ‘holding hands’ and ‘meet me in the bathroom so we can talk about how much we hate homework’ stage.
I was dropped off first and I said goodbye to my Aunt and Uncle and I attempted to say goodbye to May to be respectful to my new parents but she gave me what I like to refer to as the ‘sassy wave’ and a roll of the eyes which her parents, of course, didn’t see.
I still had a good half hour before the school doors opened so I sat in the back of the school, hoping to see Kaitlyn and Julia. I had no idea if they dropped out of school or not. I soon saw a black BMW drive up to the curb and two girls walk out.
I noticed that Julia dyed her hair a dark shade of auburn.
“Hey guys! Julia your hair looks great!” I said happily as I gave them both hugs.
“Thank you and Kaitlyn says she has some big news.” Julia raised an eyebrow at her happy-pappy friend. We walked back to the spot I was sitting alone at earlier and Kaitlyn began talking.
“Danny said the ‘L’ word last night!” She squealed.
“I’m still waiting for Ben to ask me out.” Julia rolled her eyes.
“Haven’t you kissed, snuggled and all that other couple shit?” I asked, a bit annoyed with Ben now hear this news.
“Yeah but I think he wants to build a foundation before laying down the concrete. I mean I guess it’s a good thing we have a strong relationship before we take it onward but dude I am so sick of explaining that I am technically single!” She groaned in frustration.
“He’s going to ask soon.” Kaitlyn promised her.
“I hope so, I am sick of all this fake couple bullshit.” She grumbled, making me laugh at the stubborn girls expressions of annoyance. “Anyways- we have to grab your schedule before school or you’ll leave a bad impression on your first period teacher.” Julia said, standing up and wiping the dirt off her clothes.
“I feel like even if I try hard I always somehow leave a bad impression.” I sighed.
“Look- May is a total bitch. You’re a good person with a good heart. She just needs to stop being so butt hurt.” Kaitlyn rolled her eyes. “Come on, I am sure you’ll leave a good impression on your teachers.” Kaitlyn said as we began to walk.
We walked to the front desk and I smiled at the secretary who looked up at me with that look- the look that you know there already judging. I put a bright smile on my face and tried to sound as sweet as possible for this judgmental scumbag.
“Hi I’m Everest Stone, I am a new student.” I said.
“Yeah I heard about you.” She said, sipping her steaming hot coffee that looked like it could easily burn her tongue. She pulled out a paper and she handed it to me. I smiled at her as I saw it read SCHOOL SCHEDULE – EVEREST STONE on the top.
“Thank you Ma’am.” I said and she nodded, continuing to type away on her laptop. I shrugged as I walked back towards Kaitlyn and Julia. Kaitlyn handed me my backpack and I nodded a thank you.
“What’s your first period?” Julia asked, taking my sheet. “Oh you have Mrs. Brown.” She frowned. “Good news and bad news about this.” I looked her way. “Mrs. Brown never teaches and then you flunk every one of her tests. Good news is that were in that class!” She smiled.
The bell rang loudly, making me jerk in surprise. They both grinned as they started to walk to first period. Mrs. Brown was an English Teacher. We walked in and Mrs. Brown smiled at me. She was plump with her brown hair in a bun. “You’re Everest?” She asked and I nodded. “Hello Everest! I’m Mrs. Brown. Today is an easy day, were just watching a movie. Sit wherever.” She shrugged and I nodded again.
Julia and Kaitlyn were already sitting in the back in a corner. I sat in front of Julia so we made an ‘L’ shape. More students started to walk in. Some stared at me weirdly but I just shrugged. The teacher turned off the lights and played the movie.
“So how are you liking school so far?” Kaitlyn asked me.
“Kaitlyn, its school. Also our school sucks of course she doesn’t like it.” Julia rolled her eyes.
“It was a question!” She defended and I laughed at the twos bickering. I was looking through my phone as I continued to text Andy, wanting to finish the school day already so I could go over to his house and see him. I bet Julia and Kaitlyn feel the same way about their guy friends.
I sighed as I closed my eyes, ignoring the movie on the screen and the stupid conversations coming from the other students. Fuck first impressions. I ‘m tired of trying to act nice to people who won’t return it. And with that, I feel asleep with some sort of relief.
Relief of the stress of perfection.
