Chapter 30 - Hybrid Nature

While he waits for the ambulance to arrive he sits next to Jimin and gently cards his fingers through his hair. It's unclear whether Jimin is lucid enough to understand anything he says right now, but just in case Yoongi says "Don't worry Jiminie, you'll be okay. It'll be over soon."

Once the paramedics arrive they quickly move Jimin outside, and get him into the back of the ambulance. Both of them are human, Yoongi notes. So neither will be affected by Jimin's pheromones.

A small crease appears between Jimin's brows, as he whines at being separated from Yoongi.

"Don't worry, you're safe." One of the paramedics murmurs to Jimin. Turning to Yoongi he asks "Are you his boyfriend?"

"Uhh no." A light blush colours Yoongi's cheeks at the question. "We live together but we're just friends."

The paramedic (who Yoongi now notices is called Minho on his name tag) frowns slightly. "Ahh this might be a little awkward then but would you mind comforting him on the ride over? Your scent is familiar to him so it could help stabilise his condition somewhat and calm him down."

Comfort Jimin? Yoongi's thrown for a loop, not really sure what is being asked of him. It takes him a moment to remember how Jin would stroke his hair and nuzzle him whenever he was upset when they were young. That's how hybrids comfort each other.

"You want me to scent him?" Yoongi asks uncertainly.

"Yes, if you would be comfortable with that. Otherwise even just hugging him could be helpful. Phantom heats are a serious condition, and they can have lasting effects. If he's been like this for a few hours already then it's important we try to curb the heat as quickly and safely as possible."

"Of course, I'll do what I can to help." Yoongi doesn't even have to think about it. If it's going to ease Jimin's pain then he'll do it.

They shift things around so that Jimin lays comfortably in his lap, with his face resting in the crook of Yoongi's neck. Jimin trembles slightly in his arms despite the heat radiating from him. Gently, Yoongi runs his fingers down his arm, careful not to jostle the IV inserted at Jimin's elbow. He feels conflicted at this action. There's no way Jimin can consent to this. Okay, the way Yoongi's touching him is far from sexual, and he's doing it with good intentions but it doesn't change the fact that Jimin's in heat. And Yoongi knows how he feels about heat; that he hates the vulnerability that comes with it. He wants to help Jimin so badly, and comforting is an innocent action, but it still doesn't sit quite right with him.

As if sensing his hesitation, Minho simply says "I know it might be strange, to be so close to your friend in this situation. You're under no obligation to help him, but know that you can. And when it comes to someone's health it's usually better to ask for forgiveness later." After saying his piece, he makes himself busy with changing the damp towel on Jimin's forehead for a fresh cold one, and checking that the IV is still delivering fluids correctly.

The words don't assuage all of Yoongi's doubts, but he decides to put them aside and help Jimin. Although Jin has comforted Yoongi countless times, he's never comforted him in return, at least not in the same sense. Humans console others in differnt ways. Is there a specific way he's meant to start? Or an etiquette for nuzzling that he doesn't know about? Awkwardness sits heavy in the air. This should be instinctual...

It's when Jimin starts nosing at his neck that Yoongi decides to just go for it. Hesitantly, he rubs his cheek against the top of Jimin's head. When Jimin doesn't push him away, and the ground doesn't suddenly swallow him up, he goes at it more confidently. Yoongi is surprised to find that once he gets started the nuzzling feels strangely natural. It's not weird at all. He rubs his nose into Jimin's hair, both loving and hating how strong his scent is. Even his tail curls around Jimin's thigh.
