^ Nora's nursing uniform^ Two
1916
It had been two years since the war had began which happened to be two years longer than anyone had expected it too last considering that the politicians had promised that the war would be over by Christmas arrived in 1914 and yet no one could see an end in sight as the fighting in France continued as did Nora Parker's worry about her brother and the Shelby men especially Tommy. A lot had happened in two years for those left behind in Birmingham, a year into the war John's wife had died from the influenza that had been spreading during that time leaving behind four small children with no parent among them causing Nora to step up and take over caring for them with Polly's help. She had also decided to train as a nurse as a way to help the war effort as a way to appease the guilt she felt about the fact that all the men she loved were currently endangering their lives to fight for all of their freedom. Today was one of those that promised to be busy if the start of the day was anything to judge by as she raced around John Shelby's house getting each of the children up and ready for the day as she made them all some breakfast. Since she was due at the hospital that morning, Nora wore a long grey dress with a white collar and cuffing as well as had decided to braid parts of her hair before pinning it up.
" guys come and get breakfast while it is hot" Nora said as her voice echoed through the house as she called on the other three of the Shelby children since little Katie was in the kitchen with her right now
" or I eat it all" Katie said as with her two year old voice making Nora think about how she could never remember her parents as a result of her mother dying a year ago and her father leaving when she was a baby
" and how exactly are you going to eat four bowls of porridge, little one?" Nora said as she helped the two year old up onto the seat as her older sister and two brothers came running into the kitchen
" porridge again! Urgh, I hate porridge" Harry said as the oldest one among John's children as he sat down at the breakfast table to see the grey slush that Nora had them with the war rations they had left
" it's not like we can have bacon and sausages, not while the war is still going on" Nora did deciding to skip on breakfast that morning as she made sure that each of the children had everything they needed for the day
" the war that daddy, uncle Tommy, uncle Arthur and uncle James are away shooting the Germans... bang, bang, bang!" Leo said as he pretended to shoot his older sister with his hand that he was using as a gun
" Leo, stop! Nora, tell him to stop" Anna said getting annoyed by her younger brother as Nora began to try and tame the girl's wild curls as she brushed them and tried to place them into two bunches
" you lot better not be causing Nora too much trouble now" Polly Shelby said coming into the house unannounced which was an usual occurrence for her as she arrived to look after the children for the day with Finn
