After the Great War:

Hermione:

When Hermione had heard of Fred's death, her world had come crumbling down. Hermione had never admitted the feelings she had for Fred and she regretted it immensely once Fred died. It seemed dumb to be unable to say her farewells all because of Ron, that little git who acted as if he owned her, even though he didn't. The worst part was not being able to say goodbye to him as she remembered how her secret friendship with him(that had happened when Fred had bought the S.P.E.W badge) had turned into a crush. When she first realised that she had a crush on Fred Weasley, the jokester, she had immediately felt embarrassed. She hardly knew him for God's sake! But the realisation that she wished to be the first to see his smile (and make him smile) in the morning made her realise that she really did have a crush on Fred. The regret of never being able to admit three simple words, "I love you" and not being able to be with him when he had so tragically died would forever leave a dark stain on her heart.

What could she do to make saying "sorry" easier? To tell Fred how much she missed him and his companionship? After much consideration, ( she was after all the brightest witch of her age) Hermione decided to write Fred a letter. It was silly as he won't be able to read it, she knew but what else could she do?

As soon as she was sure that no one was watching her, she took out her quill and parchment. Soon the sound of a quill, hurriedly forming words on a brand new piece of parchment could be heard as her thoughts flowed and soon a letter was formed.
