The first word that came to Sewa's mind stepping into Charming Café three months ago to apply for a job was 'cute'. From the signature cup of coffee with the words 'Charming Café' emblazoned above the black and white awning attached to the pine coloured brick walls outside, to the faint smell of lavender that always lingered after the earth-toned ceramic floors were mopped, it felt quaint and cozy compared to the other café franchises.
And like any other day in the establishment, it was serene. Business was done in an orderly manner, wait-staff attended to the customers at their tables with their usual exuberance, and customers munched away at delicate pastries while sipping different beverages. Josie, one of the workers, changed channels on the TV mounted on the cream wall, trying to settle on something that would add some entertainment to the dry atmosphere. The signature smell of coffee and dough mixed with the lavender fragrance, giving the cafe a feel of picnics in fields.
Sewa had just attended to another customer when Tola walked into the café. She looked nothing short of stunning in her red crop top, black mini-skirt, and gorgeous black suede heels. One thing was guaranteed when it came to Tola's outfits, nothing, not even a broken ankle, would stop her from wearing a pair of heels. Today, she was accompanied by a tall man with a dark, handsome face dotted with a light stubble, and a hefty figure. They settled down at one of the centre walnut tables and Sewa walked up to them.
Tola smiled at Sewa as she approached, "Hey girl. How's work?"
"Okay. What brings you here?"
"Oh, just wanted to pay this place a visit. David, this is Sewa, my roommate," she replied, gesturing to her.
"Nice to meet you," he said, smiling politely.
Sewa returned it, her eyes untouched by her smile as she observed him. He was easy on the eye so far, but then the rest had also been lookers, with hardly any character to back it up. "Same here. What can I get you guys?"
"I'll have a latte, with extra cream," Tola said.
"A shot of espresso for me, please," he returned. She nodded, taking note of his manners. At least it was a good start.
"Of course, I'll be right back."
She turned, about to head back to the counter when she heard the bell at the door jingle to announce another customer. She turned around to see who it was and froze, her jaw dropping slightly at the sight of a young man, roughly in his early twenties.
He was quite handsome with his short, stylishly dishevelled sandy hair, the slight even tan on his pale ivory face of striking features, and a lean build. But that wasn't what made Sewa stare at him dumbly as his green eyes scanned the premises, his lips curling up in a charming smile as he chatted leisurely with the man beside him with dark brown hair and piercing blue eyes.
