That was all Sewa needed to set her straight. The ice-cold reality that regarded her with surprise, her doe eyes moving from Sewa to Nathan.
She stared back at Nathan's unexpected visitor, abashed by her stupidity to have ended up here as she stood up immediately, feeling like an exposed mistress.
"The security guard let me in. We were supposed to meet up yesterday but you never showed up so I decided to check on you. Jace told me what happened. I see you have company," Malia replied, smiling politely at Sewa.
"Yeah, um, this is Sewa," Nathan said, rubbing the nape of his neck, clearly uncomfortable with the entire set-up.
She focused her attention on Malia, observing how stunning the brunette looked with her hair let down and her brown shirt dress which was flattering on her flawless skin, making her feel underdressed in her faded blue top, boyfriend jeans and faux locks that had long served its purpose.
Had the circumstances been different, she would have been fangirling over meeting one of her favourite actresses. But unfortunately, they weren't.
"Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Malia." Malia said, stretching out her hand. Sewa took it.
"Yeah I know you, you are Kara Dunham from 'Life as a teenager'. I love that show."
Malia smiled. "Always great to meet a fan," she said without a trace of animosity.
Sewa smiled back. It was wrong of her to think it but she was inwardly hoping Malia wouldn't be so nice to her. It just made her the bad guy here.
"Um, I better leave you two to talk," she said.
"You don't need to leave because of me," Malia protested, frowning slightly.
"No, it's not you. I... I just remembered I have a ton of stuff I need to do and my roommate would probably be wondering where I am."
A bold lie considering the fact that Tola couldn't care less if she dropped off the face of the earth right now.
"Sewa don't... " Nathan began but she interrupted him.
"I'll talk to you later. I really need to leave," she said, not meeting his eyes.
"Let me walk you to the door then," he persisted. She nodded, knowing that he would do it anyway regardless. He mumbled to Malia to excuse him before trailing behind her. They walked through the foyer, the only sound being made was his slippers scuffing against the slate grey porcelain floors. She knew he was looking at her but she didn't dare look back to see.
Once they got to the entrance door, she placed her hand on the handset handle but he held it to stop her.
"Sewa, look at me," he urged, turning her to face him. She didn't obey this time, the spell he had over her gone. He sighed at her resistance.
"Her being here doesn't change anything," he said, drawing his hand away to let her go.
"Go to her. She came for you," she said, staring hard at the glossed floor. He moved closer, the strong smell of vodka hitting her as he wrapped his arms around her, placing his chin on her shoulder.
"Thank you for being here. It means a lot," he whispered.
Her breath hitched as her hands remained limp at her sides, her wit kicking in on instinct to hide her own emotions. "Do me a favour and take a bath once you're done."
He grunted in reply, not letting her go. She raised her hands a little, about to hug him back when she caught glimpse of Malia standing behind them, watching them hug with hurt in her eyes. The sight froze her movement as she locked eyes with her. The gnawing feeling of guilt settled again, twisting her insides and pointing its accusing finger at her for causing this. She pushed Nathan away with firmness, ignoring the upset look on his face.
