Once upon a hot Saturday night, the next month for Sewa was hijacked by madness, starting with a simple question,
"So Sewa, guess what?"
It may have been a way of God and the universe letting her guess what she was going to have to go through. But Sewa, none the wiser and all the better, raised her head from her book to peer through the rim of her glasses at her rather jovial roommate, Tola, who hummed one of her favourite Wizkid songs as she checked her makeup in the mirror. She made a show of thinking about it before replying, very wrongly,
"Let me guess, you're finally going to burn that awful T-shirt you bought?" she half-joked with a small smile, her figure sprawled unceremoniously on their mauve patterned couch, which aside from their mini-fridge, barely managed to fill the sparse room in their apartment.
Tola pouted at her guess. "Hey, it's a nice shirt," she retorted, making Sewa snort. They both knew pretty well that shirt or anything bought during any of Tola's shopping spree in her 'season of plenty,' as she called the times she got a lot more than her normal cash flow, was either utterly tasteless or somewhat unnecessary.
"Whatever. Anyways, you know David, the guy I told you about?" the tall caramel-skinned girl continued, standing in front of the full-length mirror permanently fixed on the mundane mustard yellow wall of their compact living room. She sprayed her vanilla-scented perfume in the air to form a small fog before twirling in it, the amber lighting above giving her skin and Sewa's deep chestnut tone a warm golden glow.
"Yeah, what about him?" Sewa asked as she flipped through the pages of her psychology notes she had lost interest in reading hours ago, hoping to seem engrossed. The neat thin cursive handwriting she took pride in swirled before her eyes, wearing her down.
"Well, he asked me out on a date."
That nugget of information piqued Sewa's interest, causing her to stare inquisitively at her roommate of three months and friend for over a year. Tying her braids up in a bun to leave her square face bare, she prepped for the evening ahead. With her trim waist, she cut a stunning figure in the maroon backless dress she wore, a perfect complement to her skin tone.
"Isn't that a good thing? I mean, weren't you worried he wasn't interested?" Sewa asked.
"It is. But it's..." she shrugged, playing with the cap of her lipstick, a wistful look on her small heart-shaped face. "Oh, I don't know..."
"Too soon? Because you recently broke up with Tobi and you still aren't sure you want to continue with your bad luck streak after him, Henry, Juwon and what's the name of the other date fail last year? You know, the one with the dumb smile and lame haircut." She snapped her fingers in order to jog her memory.
