Dream is unable to follow, due to having to protect the tree.
Its only years later he able to follow, after his AU is damaged.
Up to reader, maybe he's even turned to stone by a diff evil Sans?
Meanwhile Nightmare ends in a new AU, and is adopted by the Papyrus of the AU as there is no Sans.
By the time they meet again, Nightmare gave up his past identity.
It would be up to whoever writes it if he even remember as remember Dream and Nightmare were kids when he ran.
